The new backing hasn't been done by Lightwell Smile

Are you certain? I was looking through their recently-uploaded work for New Zeland's TV3 News the other day and was shocked by the stark difference in quality between that and this, but it is still visually similar to their other work. If it was indeed not done by Lightwell, surely it's highly unethical of the BBC to so blatantly copy their unique style?

It does. Another think I've realised are there are NO elements in the new backdrop that could animate. No TV screens, no fake people at desks, no lifts. It's going to be a still image. Not very interesting.

The plasma on the other side of the pillar has computer screens.

True I just spotted them but we're probably not going to see that screen very regularly at all. Possibly in the wide shot when handing to the regions but not behind the presenters or guests?

Do you think the animating elements are important? I always thought they made the background more interesting and realistic but I know some think they're distracting.

The new backdrop isn't designed by Lightwell, although some of his elements and artwork has been reused in this. It does animate... for a start the clouds move, the trees blow in the wind and there are some screens with blurry footage. It's all a bit more subtle than before.

That's a shame, do you know why not? I'm sure the BBC are well within their contractual rights to recycle bits of previous work Lightwell has done for them, but it still strikes me as unethical and really has resulted in a less than optimal final product. Jim Mann has been announcing a lot of jobs on his twitter over the last few months, perhaps they were just too busy?

I'm glad to hear it will be animating, but the office component of the backdrop still leaves a lot to be desired. It's too sparse and oddly proportioned to be considered realistic, yet not abstract enough to be considered artistic. They'd be better off just using an animated loop of the Salford view.

I agree. I'd scrap the fake newsroom elements and just go with the skyline. The animating clouds and trees sound nice though, it's just the empty fake office that looks silly.

But you never know though, it might work on screen? Cool

Quick Q? Is Breakfast going straight into seven day a week operation at Salford? Will be interesting to note during MOTD's rerun, exclusive domestic content on the BBC NC being originated out of the capital.

You've hit the nail on the head with your last point - wait and see how it looks on screen. Promo shots will never quite capture it in the same way Smile

This question has probably been asked and answered a million times before, but why does Breakfast run right through til 10am on a Saturday, when it's only on til 9:15am Mon-Fri, and 9am Sunday?

Because it reuses the same content over and over again, so it makes sense to scrape every little bit of morning repeat out that you can?

They seem to only have an hours worth of content each morning at weekends, and just start the next hour like it's the first.

Probably also in part that some people naturally wake up later at weekends (particularly the 9 to 5 brigade)

Sundays usually finish around 7.30am to make way for the Match of the Day repeat. At weekends it is little more than schedule filler really.

The Sunday Breakfast DOES NOT finish at 7.30. The programme continues on the BBC NC.

It's sometimes suprising how different TV sets can look when captured with a photographers camera vs. how they look on screen. Hope it looks good on Tuesday.
