The backdrop is really terrible and the studio looks even worse. The sofa, table, and 'baking tray' are great but the surroundings are just rubbish. The close up shots are going to look awkward like they do on NWT too, that wouldn't be such a problem if there plasmas weren't so spaced out and the sofa wasn't at an odd angle.

I agree, they need to reposition the sofa so it hits the corner where the presenters sit, like in TC7. That would also make the shots to the standing area for the business less awkward.

What are they going to do during the North West Tonight opt-outs?

They've been coming from a separate studio ever since they moved in.

I agree that the sofa should be moved so the presenters shot hits the corner. It would make the shots in which interviews are done on the screens look much less awkward. The presenters at the moment have to stretch their necks round to interview someone, particularly if they're on the right hand side (from our perspective).

I was really hoping they'd virtually heighten the studio à la BBC Arabic, it looks positively claustrophobic even in that carefully-framed press photo.

I find the "new" backdrop baffling, it looks like they've just removed all the furniture out of the old one. If you're going to scale down the newsroom concept so drastically, why bother including it at all? A very poor effort from the BBC and (presumably) Lightwell.

I'm sure this has been answered elsewhere, but why is the roof so low? I know these days you don't need high roofs for lighting, but it just feels so cramped. Are they just crying to cram as much into the building as possible?

On the plus side, the studio does indeed look fresh and new. TC7 was really starting to show wear and tear.

I presume it's a space that wasn't intended to be a television studio so isn't particularly high. I bet they won't be able to do a wide shot without showing off the ceiling!

If you actually look: That cap features an Olympic countdown.

I wouldn't expect (or want) that to appear on BBC Breakfast.

Will we get a new thread with the Salford move?

Looks nice and fresh, background is better too. Old set was really OLD.

I presume it's set up as it is so the presenters are perpendicular to a plasma. Your suggested angle would separate the presenters with a big white column, distort the backdrop beyond recognition, highlight the significant setback of the plasmas within their housing and reveal far too much of the red light boxes.

I agree with the comments about the angle of sofa. It always looks weird in the closing shots of North West Tonight, and it just looks awkward, but the problems above show thet the current angle of two person shots takes up an entire plasma which is actually quite a good angle. It will look good to have a single presenter shot as well from there when there are two presenters because they started doing them to begin with in Media City but tend not to anymore, apart from the obvious afternoon and late bulletins. A really annoyance is when they show shots of a correspondent or OB on the second screen from the left. The angle is completely awkward, and the way the presenter turns is just terrible. They should just stick to using the first screen along for two ways.

Also I guess the large amount of space between baking tray and screens is to create a larger perspective and prevent the awful effect that Newsround has with the sofa a foot or so in front of the screens.

It's smaller and it's a compromise, but it does look really good so far, and actually on screen with different shots and more experimentation with time, which we have seen of late from TC7 will surely produce a great programme presentation wise.

It would be great if Carol could join them for the first show in Salford to ease in the changes more smoothly. Does anyone know whether she'll be nipping in to the studio from time to time? Obviously Blue Peter garden OB is perfectly likely. I'd hate to completely lose the chemistry the presenters have with Carol.

Would have liked the lighting a bit softer, but I guess the large amount of black of the ceiling and the floor will not be so present in shots.

Admittedly I don't much about the Salford move (I haven't really been keeping up, for shame I know) but I had the impression these studios were purpose built? If not, then what the hell was all that money spent on?

As for the wide shots, the one thing I thought when I saw those really nice shots on the last day of TC7 was that there's no chance they could ever do shots like that on this set. Not that it REALLY matters, but it is to a certain extent a step backward.

Originally, NWT/Breakfast were to be positioned on the ground floor where the 'BBC Sport Centre' is. The current NWT/Breakfast studio was in fact going to be a few edit suites Razz
