I know there are about 15 people from the Business Unit in Salford. Declan Curry occasionally appears on 5 Live from Salford so he could make a return. Also, Penny Haslam could continue cover - she's from Stockport, Cheshire, so I take it she would be willing to come up from London.

Obviously there will be more down the lines for Steph, and will be nearly the only one to present from the area left of the sofa since Carol will be in London. It would be great it Carol could do OBs from MediaCityUK occasionally, like Blue Peter garden or some studio visits every now and then.

Backdrop looks like a slightly new look for Breakfast.I hope so. Never been keen on the current titles.

Not sure if this had been officially confirmed until now,

So it's confirmed that BBC Breakfast starts in Salford on 10th April with Bill Turnbull & Susanna Reid and Louise Minchin & Charlie Stayt

Am I the only person who feels that we could do with an entire change of presenters, and move those four onto other bulletins?

Bill for the Six!

If I recall correctly, Bill had a stint on the Six during the 2003-2004 period. This was after Huw/Fiona moved to Ten and the bulletin went double-headed. Its main presenters were George Alagiah and Sophie Raworth, but Bill frequently deputised for George. He was rather good as I recall.

Yes i seem to recall seeing a late Rhubarb & Custard Era clip on youtube of Bill and Sian doing the 6 together. I think it must just be that sofa that turns Bill into Alan Partridge.

What i cant understand is there is going to be plenty of studio space in BH at that time of the morning, so this move makes next to no sense... unless the Beeb is deliberately trying to differentiate the programme from the rest of News and make it more like The One Show AM. In which case it could mean that Bill, Susanna, Charlie and Louise will forever be BANISHED from the BBC newsdesk (actually thats probably over egging it).

It's not just studio space, it's the production office space as well. And, in the Beeb's defense, they reportedly had more space in Salford than they had expected, and have since had to squeeze in more people than planned into Broadcasting House (because other buildings are now closing or being sold off). So, as there was no reason BBC Breakfast needed to be housed in the same building as the rest of BBC News (as a fairly self-contained production), it fitted the criteria to move.

The bigger question is why did they need to build (let's not get bogged down in the details of who owns MediaCity) a brand new Manchester hub and move a tonne of programming up North. It's hard to see how being based up north will save the Beeb any money, offer a better range of services, reach a wider audience or better the value of the license fee. Few other organisations would relocate key parts of their business hundreds of miles for purely political reasons. And if this is going to save the BBC money, better it's services or bring greater value to the license fee, they've failed in communicating that to the public.

Well they will save money in the long run as Salaries will be lower because cost of living in Manchester and surrounding areas is significantly less than in the capital. The rent on the new building is probably less as well. It was derelict docklands before the MediaCity went up. But the move still makes no sense... it's a flagship programme FFS.

Wish Susannah would stop simpering at the camera! Mad

My family want to watch Daybreak, but I don't, but I'm gradually losing patience.

(Might go back to the radio yet!)

Yes, if I remember correctly, Bill and Sian were the deputy presenters for George and Sophie between 2003 and 2004 on the Six. Sophie then went on maternity leave in which case Sian became the main co-presenter with George until Sophie returned. I think it was around this point in 2004 when the BBC started using a 'pool' of male relief presenters to fill in when George was absent, such as Jon Sopel, Dermot Murnaghan and Darren Jordon. Bill Turnbull carried on as a relief up until late 2006, IIRC, along with Darren Jordon until he left the BBC to join Al Jazeera. I think it was around this time, in early 2007-ish, when Ben Brown and Nicholas Owen started to deputise in George's absence, right up until late 2007, when the bulletin went solo.

COMPLETELY off topic, I know!!!

Yes, and don't forget that Natasha Kaplinsky deputised on the Six at some point and also became its lead female for a while. Possibly after Anna Ford left and Sophie moved to the One? Is that correct or am I starting to become befuddled after so many years of watching BBC News Laughing (It's a bloody good job we're not trying to recontrust the presenting teams of the Six in the 90s! There were dozens!!)

Absolutely spot on, itsrobert. Sophie went on maternity leave in late 2005 when Natasha became the lead female on the Six. Anna Ford then announced her retirement from the One in April 2006, which is when Sophie returned from maternity and took over as the main presenter of the One, Natasha formally became lead Six co-presenter with George, and the weekday dream team was finally created on Breakfast, with Bill and Sian. Natasha carried on as Six lead female until October 2007, when she announced she was moving to Five News straight away, and after that is when the Six became solo with George! In a nutshell....

You are indeed correct, but rather Natasha took over for Sophie's second pregnancy and simply carried on once she returned as she took over the one.
