Back to GMB I go.

GMB will probably gain some viewers today thanks to this very poorly implemented "revamp" of Breakfast.

I doubt the number will be that high, but I'm sure at least a few will jump ship.

EDIT: Looking on Twitter, reaction is minimal. As I said, likely to have little effect on ratings.

Does the general viewer really think "I'm no longer watching BBC Breakfast because they don't have a decent title sequence / inconsistent presentation?". I know it's disappointing to many on here (myself included) but I'd put money on the general, sizeable audience for BBC Breakfast not giving two hoots about it and continuing to watch as they did.

Not that there's much to give two hoots about this morning...

God, not very often that a relaunch is universally hated by TVF, is it? So allow me to break rank with everyone else...

I quite like the bits they've refreshed! The music is LOVELY and creates a bit more of a pace to the opening headlines sequence, where previously it was very calm and often felt a bit slow (even though you'd get to the top story far before you do on GMB). I would have liked to see some proper titles but I do like the stings that bookend the open of the show as well, the new sunrisey curve thing they've got going on is much better than the glitter ball.

However, it is a shame that the studio hasn't seen any alterations at all - I know they never said they were going to be any at this point but at the very least they could have got rid of the disco ball from the old titles on the backdrop for consistency. I also don't like the habit Breakfast has got into of making its own graphics that don't fit in with the BBC News style (aka the ones they use during the 6:30 coming up sequence and in the headline recaps). It feels messy IMO and would much rather they altogether break with the standard BBC News branding or that they stick with the house style properly.

I don't think James Mobbs can't be trusted anymore. Wink

I suspect it's more that the powers that be wouldn't let him update the whole lot. In isolation these stings look fine. It's just when taken as a whole with an awful set and elements of the previous look that they are jarring.

Not normally one to quote myself but...

Is this going to be a decent refresh, or will it be like when a region goes rogue and changes everything to Arial?

I really doubt too many will. As ever, some forget that while we may care about TV presentation many viewers really don't and fewer still will change channel based only on the graphics.

There is so little to this refresh most won't even notice it. Many viewers probably never see the top of the hour anyway.

As for any change in music it's still very much generic BBC News circa 2000.

I think we were expecting too much and they delivered so little, this is going to live long in TV Forum memory as the most disappointing relaunch ever.

The new graphics do look good, it’s just a shame they can’t be implemented fully. I suspect James Mobbs was working on a very tight budget. Not removing all of the elements of the previous branding is rather lazy though, it has to be said. The the screen designs could have been updated quite easily by changing the design on the vertical ‘banners’. It’s a shame that there aren’t any full titles.

I think Breakfast could adopt its own style of graphics that don’t conform to the BBC News lower thirds. Breakfast is, after all, a program in its own right. GMB manage to have their own graphics, but retain a link with ITV News.
