Newscaster Sian Williams’s pregnant pause
There is a generation of women newscasters whose only chance of appearing on television these days seems to be when one of the younger ones becomes pregnant.
Mandrake therefore has news that may well be of interest to the likes of Selina Scott: Sian Williams — the 43-year-old co–anchor of BBC One’s Breakfast — is expecting a child by her boyfriend, Paul Woolwich, in March.
Sian already has one son by Woolwich, a television executive 11 years her senior, and two sons from her marriage to Neale Hunt.
“I am thrilled to be pregnant, and the other children are very excited about having a little brother or sister,” she says.
A BBC spokesman says it has yet to decide who will stand in for Sian. How about the much-missed Anna Ford?

Mishal didn't cover Sian's maternity leave...she herself only left to go on leave the weekend before N6 was redesigned in the May with Sian going at the end of summer (??) - Susanna Reid came back to weekends taking over from Mishal. I think Kate and Louise covered the majoriry of Sian's shifts until she returned early in 2007.

What about Kate Silverton going back to BBC Breakfast. She did cover some of Sian's last maternity leave, as did Mishal Husain, who is now doing World News Today. Of course, Kate doesn't do much now because the 1 and 8pm bulletins are no longer presented by her.

I think the show has to be careful that it doesn't loose it's identity. If the pairings change too often will people still stick with it? I know women go on maternity leave but Sian & Bill have a good rapport, and if the team gets broken up the viewers might tune out.
Susannah Reid should be the stand in for Sian.

While I would quite like to see Susanna take it she has three young children, so may prefer sticking to three days a week. I have a feeling it will probably be Silverton, since she hasn't another role at present. As long as they don't do something silly, like bringing the awful Sonia Deol in or something like that, I think people will still tune in.

That's a a shame as she'd be perfect, the viewers are familiar with her and she is very good when working with Bill. It sounds like it will be Silverton, but I don't think she's that good personally.
Victoria Hollins, Louisa Preston or Katharine Carpenter from BBC London would be a good presenter for the show. Unfortunately as the good female presenters become mothers, they either reduce their appearances on Breakfast or leave it altogether like Sophie Raworth or Mishal Hussain.

I'd love for a more mature woman like Selina Scott or Anna Ford to be given the programme for a few months. I was in the USA recently and thought it was great how NBC Today (Breakfast's equivalent) had a mature woman as its regular host (Meredith I think her name was). Why does every woman who reads the news on British TV nowadays have to be some young hottie? I'm not saying they should all go, but at this rate there will be no-one over the age of 50 on TV anymore.
