Apologies if I have missed this, but have the BEEB announced who'll be stepping into Dermot's shoes yet?

Nope. To be honest it looks like they might not bother to make an announcement at all, so I assume Bill in the week and Charlie at the weekend. If an outsider was going to come it would have been announced and if someone like Simon was going to takeover they'd probably have been given a 'practice run' over the festive period, but only Charlie and Bill have been on.

Why the hell would they be given a "practice run"? They're professionals who can read an autocue, ask questions and read out comments from brain-dead viewers, surely that's enough?

Indeed. People don't seem to realise that they can in fact do a whole programme without it actually going out on air! It's called a pilot....

True. I just meant a 'practice run' in the same way that Emily and Ben appeared on World and 24 doing relief shifts before the new schedule came into place and they got a slot.

But that isn't the case. Ben Brown had occasionally presented on BBC World since at least 2000. Broadcasters don't do 'practice runs' on the air - they do them off air.

Oh, I didn't realise Brown had done presenting for that long before 2007.

Back on topic, the RT says that it will be Turnbull Monday-Thursday and Stayt Friday-Sunday from the week starting 7th January, so it looks like this is the new line up. The best choice for Breakfast I think, and good to see Bill and Sian re-united.

So

i've had an official warning from moderators for calling another member a Geek in an earlier post on this thread (now removed I notice).

Some people need to get a sense of humour.

It seems that anybody can comment on the beauty or ugliness of actual real people on here (i.e. actual newsreaders who we are discussing), people can be abusive about the likes of Peter Sissons and Tim Wilcox on the News24 thread, people can call Kate Silverton a Jade Goody look a like (NONE OF WHICH I AGREE WITH BY THE WAY...).....

But if i tease somebody on here WHO DOESN'T USE THEIR REAL NAME (like me) and is a news geek (like me) and who gets called a geek on here (like i have in the past - but took it as the joke in which it was intended) - Then I get a complaint about me!! Ha Ha!!!

What's THAT all about?????????

John ,remember some people who post here are just a spineless supine bunch - who feel the need to excessively post away on fora such as this one to boost their own self-esteem.

It's because the moderator who warned you is usually at the centre of some of the most insulting and cruel posts regarding the looks, style and professionalism of journalists who appear on TV.

Happy new year!

Think many people here may be surprised at how common the "on-air" screentest is...

Sure people who have never presented before are given some coaching on autocue and some run-throughs off-air, to get them familiar with looking at the right camera, working with talkback, reading autocue naturally, turning in a comfortable manner etc.

However when a presenter is moving from a junior role to a senior role (where they already have autocue, talkback and camera skills) things are a bit different. They may trail an existing presenter to see how the shift works etc. , but any off-air screen-test is usually so unrealistic for a 24 hour news channel, or a show like breakfast that requires a degree of charisma and bonding with a co-presenter that the only way to see how a presenter really works on-air is to test them - on-air...

I thought Declan Curry already did provide business news for News24 up until about lunchtime?
