It makes the studio look bigger i think .
But some how people think it looks to cold Rolling Eyes

I think the problem was with the close-ups. It was just totally blue behind the presenters and looked weird, especially when the clashing red sofa was visable

The close-ups were indeed one problem, but I think the most significant aspect of that was not the flat blue background, but rather the appalling joins between the screen panels, where some adjacent panels differed significantly in contrast and brightness.

It's visible enough on the above wide shot; it looked terrible close-up.
So how is that fixed now, and why couldn't they simply have fixed it on the sky shots. Also, actually what is the current design - is it just a load of orange boxes or actually meant to be something...?

I don't see the problem with having a London skyline backdrop on BBC News. Let's face it, the programme is broadcast from London - everyone knows that - so why try to hide it by having a backdrop of another city, or a mixture of cities? I think this country is going overboard on political correctness, which is one of the reasons I think it is going to the dogs, but that discussion's for another time. If BBC News was broadcast from Liverpool, then I'd expect to see a Liverpool skyline behind the presenters. What concerns me more is the London-centric agendas on news bulletins - not the backdrop.

But surely the London-centric backdrop only adds to the London-centricism of the entire program? We know it's broadcast from Londo, but the entire population does not want to wake up to the London skyline. As you mentioned, the One, Six and Ten have the London backdrop, but what I was saying, is that the mock-up on the previous page was TOO London-Centric.

I just don't like the idea of having the screens at all! I would much prefer to instead have a News 24 style set for BBC News, overlooking the main BBC News part of TC and go back to a warmer-feeling (for those idiots who thought it was cold) cloud design for Breafast that doesn't need to be on a screen.

But considering the BBC invested so heavily in those screens they should at least put more use into them - on the news have a picture of the story behind them or something.

Another Idea I had was to have some "real" elements to the set, something like having the 2 columns with the red squares on them, in front of the videowall behind either the couch or the desk, just to make the set more cozy.

Do you actually watch the programmes you are commenting about Rolling Eyes

Arrow Breakfast has to use the screens because they share N6 with the National Bulletins.
Arrow The Nationals use the screens extensively to illustrate the stories both from the main desk and in the other half of the studio using either the presenters or reporters.

I think the Breakfast set would look alot more warm and welcoming if they had blocks spaced out on the video wall (like Sunday AM but obviously not the same ones). It would look much more tider and it would cover up the messy job of the two back corners of the video wall.

I think they should have the sofa and the small desk on a tray in the center of the set. With a orange/red type carpet covering the bottom of the tray (similar to Sunday AM) and this would mean the desk wouldn't be on the set, which is good as they don't actually need it - at the moment their just using it because it's their.

The background for the video wall would probably be something similar to the blue sky background, but with faded squares on it, the pattern of the current background on the video wall. So what do you think of my idea's for the Breakfast set?

speaking as a Northerner, a London backdrop would look much better then grim and dirty Bradford Wink

I'm sure Look North could supply some looped pictures of buses in Hull if you'd prefer that.

In fact, how can people say that the Breakfast clouds are cold and not the BBC Skyline???

But TC7 (where the Politics Show is broadcast from) is exactly the same layout as N6 with screens. What difference would it make except for a very late night redressing of the set after Newsnight in the evening and another redressing for Working Lunch, while N6 sat idle from 11pm until the morning bulletins.

The blue clouds on Breakfast were static and boring in close-up and showed the bad alignment of some of the screens. It wasn't making best use of the technology. The current breakfast and nationals backgrounds are more complex and actually quite nice IMHO.

The nationals use the screens for more than just the main story. Interviews are conducted that way together with introductions to reports.

I'd have thought that being able to redress the set for different programmes just by changing what is fed to the screen is a pretty good use of them

I swear the Politics Show doesn't use the same type of screens though - and I meant the type of layout used previously by Breakfast.

I honestly think the background for the nationals should use either the BBC World image currently being used while in TC7.
