I still have not seen the virtual shot of studio 33D that was used in the pilots. Maybe it was just an experiment and has been dropped, but it looked very impressive. Let's just say the studio was made to look a lot bigger, and it had everyone in the office fooled who had never stood in the studio.

Is the virtual balcony generated using a similar system to the Theatre of News? The camera does a bit of a zoom so it's not your bog standard overlay presumably...?

I think you'll find the camera isn't zooming - but the combined static camera + matte is gently DVE zoomed to simulate a camera zoom.

ITV News used to do the same on their opening prior to them getting the VR Theatre of News.

Could just be a clever DVE, the old ITV News set used to use an effect to make it look as though the camera was zooming in when really the whole picture, overlay and all was being zoomed digitally.

And knowing the people involved at BBC Arabic it isn't a surprise the technique has popped up there ...

I don't really understand all these virtual set talk. You mean the set BBC Arabic has is virtual, both the main desk and the smaller one with the gallery as backdrop?

No - we're saying it isn't - but the big studio can have a CGI "second storey" matted / keyed in electronically combined with a bit of DVE zoom to simulate a camera move and making the studio and newsroom look bigger than it really is.

The 2nd floor of the Arabic Studio, is just an image placed on top of the shot, to make it look bigger...

Yep - and any "zoom" will be done by electronically zooming into the composite picture - not by zooming on the camera.

Does anyone know whether the newsroom behind the presenter is the actual new newsroom at Egton house or a digital version on some screens?

The bit behind the presenters is real, although there is some very clever trickery in one of the shots. Keep your eyes open Tuesday, see if you can spot the join.

Anybody has the capture of the trickery in action? Very Happy

I would expect it would look more realistic on TV as the compression wouldn't make the white under the desk blur so much.

The longer version of those titles just reinforces the idea of them being a doomsday device though Laughing

Is BBC Arabic 'off air' currently? I get redirected to a radio feed and the headlines video is showing text headlines instead.
