Mike Smartt: wasn't he just on the Six? He and Laurie Mayer being occasional stand ins?

No idea whether this link will work but here goes:

If it doesn't, watch the last 'fish fingers' video dated 1988 on this page: http://www2.tv-ark.org.uk/news/bbcnews/late.html

Thanks, Rob. Mike Smartt clearly evident. Nice nostalgic images.

At the risk of thread creep, memorable to see the caption card showing Jeremy Hands of ITN reporting from the Falklands. Jeremy was one of the "pool" reporters who fed reports for both ITN and the BBC during the conflict, signing off for both channels as "Jeremy Hands, British Television News, Port Stanley".

Back to The Nine: those behind the scenes images on TV Ark show the relative pokiness of the studio. Opening shot, on the other hand, gives an impression of grandeur and vastness.

And all that was was something like a wide angle lens on the camera, to give it that illusion of size. Don't know the specifics, but it would have just been a particular lens on the camera to achieve that effect.
