Does anyone remember the golden years when Xmas day bulletins were massive ratings hits?

No, not really. What I do remember is Christmas Day programmes getting massive audiences, and obviously the news that was sandwiched between them picking up on that

No one in 1970 turned the telly on solely to watch the news, 2020 is no different

An overall appalling commitment to News from the BBC over the Xmas period. I fathom why on earth Jane Hill was in there until almost midnight last night and Clive is there tonight for a bulletin probably watched by nobody.

This post is obviously dripping with sarcasm. However, the point about Jane Hill and Clive Myrie being brought in to read 90 second afternoon summaries on BBC 1, with 6 - 7 hours then until they are required to read the 10 minute BBC 1 late bulletin, that's on so late the majority of viewers will be in bed, is a valid one. The 90 second news summary could just of easily been done by the on-duty NC presenter.
Do BBC News managers think that people will instantly switch off if they see an 'unfamiliar' NC face on a BBC 1 news summary/bulletin?

Jane hill did do the 8-9pm shift on Christmas day as well as BBC 1 updates

And for all those moaning last week it's worth noting that this week the BBC have 20-minute bulletins pretty much every day at 1pm, 6pm and 10pm - far less movement around the schedules than normal by the looks of it.

They even had a 20 minute bulletin at 1pm today , highly unusual for a Sunday.

Couldn't someone like Sally Bundock, Nancy Kacugria, Joanna Gosling Antina McVeigh or Victoria Derbyshire who present non-main bulletins on BBC One/Two/Four, of done the late afternoon shift and BBC One update?

Or couldn't Jane Hill have done it?

Oh, hang on - she did! Nothing to see here - just some people who still think newsreaders do nothing whilst they're not on screen.

Sally and Nancy do the 5:00 hour on BBC1, not comparable to prime time. What's wrong with Jane presenting them?

Let's head away from the rota discussion here. If you find yourself writing " A presented at B time" and A is a network newsreader, there really isn't much point. Same with listing presenters ad nauseam.

Match of the Day Live goes to a news bulletin during halftime

I think the opening and closing titles were longer than the bulletin itself.

For anyone who missed it, Gary did a "now for the latest BBC News with Clive Myrie" intro (which for some reason reminded me of the type CBBC presenters used to do during BFT!), fade through black briefly into the news filler before full titles then full end and fade again right back to Gary. Felt like just a throw to/from Clive would have been slicker.

And I don't know if it was just me but do the lights normally sparkle like this or was just a tweak for Christmas Day?!

I think it may have just been for Christmas, I’ve not noticed it after or before Christmas Day.

I suspect they wanted a clear distinction between Gary Lineker and anything news related which a handover wouldn't provide.
