Having missed it initially, it seemed like Chris and Joanna had the news before producers were prepared to run with it.

Almost certainly, if a newsroom had even an inkling about a big story like that they will let everyone know just in case even if it's not immediately for air

Even so, for it to throw Chris twice in the headlines as he was clearly unsure whether they were running with it or not seemed a little off. My question is rather why they held back on reporting it and completed the headlines - they seemed to have only one source (PA) so their usual (or previous) policy of 'wait for a second source' didn't seem to apply, so why the delay? Who would have confirmed the legitimacy of the story, and would producers have waited for a more senior producer/ executive to approve them running it?

With something as big as that I'd have thought so, yes. It's certainly something they have to be absolutely sure about before running with it, you can imagine the consequences if it was erroneously reported.

Of course it being on PA isn't necessarily an indication that it's true, accidents can and have happened.

Nothing about that particular title sequence works.

That's a BBC News issue rather then a Thatcher death issue.

Sorry, mum.

I watched a bit of ITN news around 1:40, as opposed to the back to back telephone interviews on the other channels, they had an in studio discussion between Kelvin MacKenzie and Ann Widdecombe - an amazing achievement to organise and pull that off in that timescale I thought. For me , that was the best bit of the breaking coverage.

Apart from the fact it featured Kelvin MacKenzie, obviously.

The BBC website had "Live: Thatcher [death/dies]" up there for a while.

Why is this still breaking news after four hours?
