Another earthquake near Jakarta - apparently 8.2 on the Richter scale. I wonder if the BBC will be quicker at sending correspondents out this time.

News 24 have got a breaking news strap on the story, not sure about other news channels. Not on BBC News Online yet.

EDIT: From the Washington Post: LONDON, March 28 -- An 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck in the sea off the coast of Sumatra Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey told Reuters on Monday.

A USGS spokeswoman said the quake struck 125 miles west northwest off Sibolga, Sumatra, or 880 miles northwest of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, close to where a 9.0 December quake triggered a devastating Tsunami in Asia.

Just done a flick around and it's on Sky, ITV, BBC N24 and CNN.

As I said on MP, lets hope this isn't another tsunami.

It doesn't look good. Evacuations of coastal areas have been advised.

Predictable though I may sound, News 24 have been absolutely p-ss poor at covering this.

Are earthquakes not their thing?

It's about 40 minutes since the news broke, and they've only just got into gear and started interviewing people... but the people they're talking to are the people Sky had half an hour ago.

Sky stuck with it and dropped the breaks at 6pm, whereas N24 went to the weather. At 6 N24 went into regular coverage with Tories/Jackson trial and just left the strap on, whilst Sky were interviewing people in the region.

Considering the vast number of correspondents the BBC have in the region, I'm amazed they were so slow off the blocks.

Sky have a very interesting 'yellow' map up now - a bit weird, never seen it before.

Me neither. It appears this map is zoom-able. Jeremy has also had the Skystrator out.

The maps from the websites have been shown on News 24 and CNN in addition to their own maps.

ITV went to the ITV Weekend News as normal at 18:45. It appears BBC News 24 have dropped Sportsday. CNN have dipped into domestic coverage a couple of times. Sky News have been the only UK channel so far that have stuck with the story non-stop and not move on to other things or take a break.

It did a slow zoom in and different elements appeared afterwards (yellow flag, epicentre icon)

News 24's map isn't moving at all. Also, they've just gone to the weather, but that's because they're changing presenters.

Sky and News 24 now have pictures from Indonesian TV. Doesn't really show a lot, though..

[edit] News 24 now have what lookes like cameraphone footage of swaying lights and things, via NHK. They've also got a new map with a bit of a gradient fill on it.

The pictures from "iTV" are of things happening in Thailand.
