The guardian article is surprisingly fair- not what I've come to expect from the organisation. I think the point about getting to Aceh is very valid- this is where the story started, away from the tourist beaches of Thailand.

I've just realised that your username isn't really the most appropriate anymore.

You are of course right.

I would like to point out to anyone remotely confused, that I've had this username on this forum for many, many years (through the famous TV forum crashes that many round here won't be aware of).

I've sent an email to asa to achieve a change ASAP.

Eric McInnes also sent a report for HTV to use, speaking specifically about and to Welsh viewers.

Tonight's SIX and ITV Evening News were both outstanding. Very well produced indeed.

He also did a report on Londoners caught up in the Tsunami for last night's London Tonight.

Its a good example of the cost savings that can be made by the regions and ITN working under the umbrella of the ITV news division.

A good defence, but it still doesn’t explain why yet again, the BBC were left on the back foot and shown up by Sky and ITN. There really is no excuse for the world’s biggest and allegedly most powerful news gathering organisation to left in the dust of the likes of Sky and yet they were.

What I don’t understand is that the BBC is trying to carve a different image of them than that of the Sky. They seem to always start with this view; yet with what only seems like peer pressure, give in at the eleventh hour and in this case, finally mobilise their heavyweights to the region.

I find Roger Mosey’s implication that those who would choose Sky over the BBC are tabloid trash a little harsh and somewhat offensive. I am certainly no dimwit and yet I would always choose Sky News over the BBC as a matter of personal choice. I think it most unfair that Matt Wells comparison of Jeremy Thompson to Damien Day very unfair although perhaps had a point with Kay Burley.

Perhaps those who appreciate the BBC coverage could help me understand its value by replying with comments OTHER than “Well it’s because Sky is just soooo tabloid like”. It’s a comment which is easy to say, but not so easy to substantiate. What makes Sky News tabloid and HOW is the BBC far better in its so called measured coverage?

i guess its only natural for regions to share resources now they're part of the same company, however (as far as we know) eric has only provided report for ex-carlton regions so far.

interesting central west send 2 of their "faces", rather than (for example) 1 central and 1 htv face. which would mean 2 regions see a familiar face, rather than just 1.

but anyway, well done central. having reporters in the region really did make bbc mid's chit chatting about the events look feeble.

I think that BBC News 24 is at a considerable advantage because of the number of 'plugs' it gets from BBC News.

Also a lot of people, especially those who buy Freeview boxes, will tune in to News 24 over any other news channel as they believe they would be watching the best as it is the BBC. Many people who have Freeview probably do not know Sky News exists, what it is or how to get it.

Do you really think people with Freeview can find BBC News on 40, but not Sky News on 42? Not sure I follow that argument...

Not bashing Sky - but the major difference for me has been the tone and pace of reporting. The BBC seem to be letting pictures "breathe" a bit - not describing in voice over what is plain to see from the pictures. Andrew Harding's understated measured tone is amazingly effective - his packages have been incredibly powerful and truly some of the most effective pieces of television news reporting I have seen.

I think the BBC reporting team have been ahead pretty much everywhere - and so they should be - they are incredibly well resourced.

Presentation is a different matter - Sky News and ITV News effectively have only one "group" - whereas the BBC have World, News 24 and BBC One presenter pools to chose from.

Jon Sopel and Lyse Doucet have both been highly effective in my opinion - though the lack of a "BBC One" face, until George Alagiah arrived in Sri Lanka, in the location presentation stakes is noteworthy.

I think Sky are incredibly good at "selling" their coverage - however I also think that sometimes the tone hasn't been quite right. I'm not one to bash but I did find some of Kay Burley's stuff pretty difficult to watch (she did look too "polished") - Julie Etchingham however has been excellent.
