Agreed. A very good News Special.

ITV's special was very impressive, shows the quality of news ITN can create. I do hope when their contract comes back up for renewal ITV lets ITN play with the budget it deserves.

I agree with Aphrodite and others. A moving programme indeed. I particularly like the way ITN credited its cameramen (albeit with startled looking passport photographs). It seems to me that by broadcasting such a programme at prime time, without giving in to the temptation of including commercial breaks, ITN has surpassed the BBC coverage. Whoever wants to watch that old windbag Sissons in London at 0930 anyway? Well done ITN, and thankyou for a thoughtful programme.

And another thing. It's worth bearing in mind that the programme went out at 0200 local time, after Mark Austin will have spent the whole day filming and editing. And the interview with Kofi Annan is a rare scoop.

So, UTV will essentially show a recording of news special that was broadcast live, with recorded inserts, and latest reports?

What a sorry excuse for a TV company it is - the company that had no local news at all for four-and-a-half days over/after Christmas, and to think they were part of a consortium to replace ITN as the news provider for ITV a couple of years back.

Pathetic.

A very good news special from ITV News. And UTV did make the wrong decision - the local programmes should have been shifted to 10pm instead.

I always turn to ITV for major events and their coverage is generally very memorable, from Kirsty Young talking to her husband on Sept 11th through to the live coverage of the end of the Beslan seige last summer.

ITV's coverage this week has also been superb, often the first (or so they tell us!) foreign journalists in many locations. They've also done very well with their news specials on Monday and tonight, plus extended their coverage and keeping viewers up to date without blanket coverage.

Even worse i thought that Julian was very matter of fact when he did the IVC into it just another programme no particular tone of mood used.UTV should have just used their news ident into Tsunami and Julian could have voiced over it .His IVC style although toned down wasn't quite the right approach.

Good to see N24 using a Generic breakdown sting at 9.55pm this evening (the one thats used on the half hour) except with no "24" overlaid.

Happy New Year everyone

After the ITN endcap on tonights programme STV treated us to their festive ident and jingle playing along with announcer saying that was an ITV News special etc etc Rolling Eyes .The little festive jingle was not appropriate. The TC should have just put up a simple STV caption.

They did keep with the ITN caption for at least 15 secs so they probably had to do something quickly to fill up the time.

Scottish and Grampian could surely use the breakbumper as an ident, like they do with their Night-time TV logo into the news overnight. I do wonder whether they're being told what's happening at times though - they were caught out earlier this week and an ITV1 ident appeared for about 15 seconds.

And actually, surely SMG have a obit plan for what to do should a member of the Royal Family die - they must have idents planned, or at the very least are preparing to use still logos, for that. They could have implemented some of these procedures tonight.

Agreed. I just watched it on the ITVNC and it was superbly produced and reported, really bringing the human horror home - from Aceh to Sri Lanka.

John Irving's report must surely deserve an award for its brilliance and tact.

Well done, ITV.

Don't forget, 0870 60 60 900 for your donations. I am pretty skint at the moment, but I donated £100 a few days ago because whatever troubles we as Brits may have, they are dwarfed in comparison to the horror these poor, innocent people have suffered.
