The breaks are automated ( or at least the one at 56 minutes past is ) so regardless of whats happening, unless transmission has been made aware of a change in schedule the break kicks in. (transmission is operated else where away from the Sky News gallery)

Its upto the producer, the only time they miss the adverts are if there's breaking news (in which case there wasn't) The DA (director asst) is in charge of time, so maybe he/she lost track of time or Martin's feedback failed..
The gallery mixes the broadcast and sends it to TX which is just across the road from Sky News Centre, The gallery as to request TX not to take them off air, if not then TX will cut the broadcast at :56:50 for the final adverts and back in time for the next hour of news.

I am not English so I may seem quite stupid but I am really surprised that the highest share of BBC News 24 is 2.0% and that the highest share of BBCNews+Skynews+ITV is 5.0! I mean, are there other information channels? What do the other 95% watch?
I think those figures are for digital or multichannel homes rather than all viewing (though I might be wrong)
Even so the other 95% of viewers are mainly still watchin BBC One, Two, ITV1, C4 and Five (the main terrestrial general networks) - though they are also watching any of the 100s of digital channels (the UKTV, LivingTV, Hallmark, MTV/VH1 and other Music channels, BBC/ITV/C4 digital services, Shopping Channels, Movie Channels, Sports Channels, Ethnic Channels etc.)
The share is not relative to other news channels - it is relative to ALL digital channels. We have 100s over here - and the main networks are still able to command peaks of 20-40% share.

Hey North East,
As if by magic - here is an example of the figures for the ITV News Channel based on Quarter Hour Satellite TV overnights, according to BARB.
Remember these are figures for satellite platforms so when Sky or News 24 is ahead, it's a spurious stat because it doesn't include multichannel (ie. Freeview) homes.
This is the best way to compare because ITV NC is not available on Freeview.
Figures are presented as a percentage of audience share on satellite platforms.
They aren't very good, so we'll spare blushes but:
Yesterday at 13.00
BBC News 24: 2.0% share
Sky News: 2.3% share
ITV NC:0.4%
Yesterday at 16.00
BBC News 24: 1.4% share
Sky News: 0.8% share
ITV NC:0.1% share
And just be to very scurrilous, at the same time:
QVC shopping channel: 0.2%
Smash Hits!: 0.2%
Yesterday at 22.00
BBC News 24: 0.6% share
Sky News: 0.8% share
ITV NC: 0.1% share

Wow...the British Government has now pledged £50 million to the relief effort. I imagine now the American Government will have to review their position as their $30 million will look increasingly meagre in the face of the $120 million in total that has been devoted here.
