One of my little helpers at The Corporation got them for me. Apparently they're available on the internal Auntie-Intranet.
cat, er the point of News 24 is that BBC News viewers watch the channel and not the main networks. Since when does BBC One or BBC Two brand themselves as news channels? That's the reality of this "multichannel" world everyone keeps talks about.
It does roughly break even though at each important time, ie 12h00, 13h00 and 17h00, where continuous news channel viewerships are at their peak, News 24 is ahead of Sky News.
I didn't ask for ITV NC but they would be statisically distorted because the channel is not on Sky.

Regular BBC News viewers having to look to News 24 rather than BBC One and Two for coverage, as the latter two were providing absolutely none, perhaps?
It roughly breaks out as even, with Sky ahead at some times and News 24 ahead at others.

Hmm...Is discussing something as trivial as ratings really appropriate at this stage? Surely we should 'Discuss' the actual way in which the various news outlets handle this horrendous situation.
I've tried watching a little of all the main news outlets.
BBC News
The main bulletins on BBC 1 are well put together and handled sensitively by the likes of Huw Edwards. News 24 however is a whole lot tougher to watch. Given the scale of this event, I think they come across to much like its any other news story in a given hour. A lack of sensitivity and to robotic for my liking.
Sky News
I am impressed by the speed at which Reporters, Correspondents and Presenters have been dispatched to the area. Especially given the size of the Sky operation. Sky often pull ahead from News 24 with covering these types of human tragedy. Their presenters are often much easier to watch without the rigidity that exists at News 24. I also think placing peoples messages home on the ticker (however effective) is a nice touch.
ITV News
Not really caught a lot of ITV News bought what I have seen I have been impressed by. The graphics are very informative and again the compassion on the faces of the presenters is evident and a refreshing change.
CNN International
CNN seem to suffer the same fate as that of News 24 and their coverage is a little light with not a lot of their people in the region. I can’t help but feel I’m not really getting much an informed picture when watching CNN
MSNBC
You remember when the ITN news channel launched and every bulletin was made for 15 minutes and simply recycled there after? Well it’s exactly the same with this channel. Diabolical and no wonder nobody watches it in the US.
Fox News Channel
I think the award for Irony 2004 goes to FNC. With all the tragedy that was going on, what was the Breaking News? How France pledged only $145,000 compared to the US’s $30 Million. Cue Aston with a break down of spending amongst the G8 Nations. As if it is some kind of competition and they will no doubt expect Kudos from their ‘amazing’ contribution to. Anyway, the bulletin I saw only devoted 4 minutes to the story before running a package on that old faithful American Cable News Trash story; The Laci Peterson Case.
…And that’s my word!

As is customary when big stories break, BBC News 24 comes in for the ritual bashing. “Too slow, no big name presenters, bla bla”, is what is constantly shouted.
It seems the perception on these forums that Sky is better than News 24 because it sends presenters to the scene and has big flashy graphics and a quaint little ticker. Thankfully British TV viewers seem a little more discerning. It seems that they have realised that just because you have a ‘swish’ here and a ‘woosh’ there doesn’t make your coverage any better.
Don’t believe me?
Here are the overnight audience ratings figures for multichannel homes.
On Sunday, December 26th at 1am the quake struck. That morning massive tsunamis and waves start to engulf coasts across central Asia.
Here are BBC News 24 v Sky's audiences, given as percentages of the audience share in multichannel homes, according to BARB
Audience figures are given in ‘000s
At 9am on Sunday morning Sky’s audience was almost double News 24’s.
BBC News 24: 2.8% 100.3
Sky News: 4.9% 198.0
However as the scope of the quake began to unfold News 24 rapidly caught up with Sky News and by noon News 24 was actually AHEAD of Sky News by an inch.
BBC News 24: 2.1% 147.2
Sky News: 2.1% 146.8
Interestingly by 15.00 on Sunday afternoon News 24 had surged ahead of Sky News, whose audience share plummeted:
BBC News 24: 1.9% 151.3
Sky News: 0.8% 65.4
By 17.00 on Sunday afternoon News 24 had consolidated its lead on Sky News which was now beginning to lag behind:
BBC News 24: 1.6% 174.7
Sky News: 0.9% 105.5
At 22.00 on Sunday evening News 24 remained ahead of Sky News in terms of numbers of viewers and share, although overall share dropped:
BBC News 24: 0.7% 95.0
Sky News: 0.6% 85.0
And the trend continues throughout Monday and Tuesday…
Remember no figures are given prior to 9am because New24 is effectively ‘Breakfast’
So at 9am on Monday 27th December Sky News was ahead
BBC News 24: 3.7% 138.3
Sky News: 5.2% 216.0
But again News 24 had taken the lead by noon
BBC News 24: 2.7% 183.9
Sky News: 2.4% 163.1
And was again ahead at 18.00
BBC News 24: 1.2% 149.3
Sky News: 1.1% 142.6
However at 22.00 on Monday evening News 24 had slipped behind Sky News
BBC News 24: 1.0% 145.4
Sky News: 1.2% 174.0
This is possibly because the 22.00 news on BBC One was late due to the Billy Connolly programme.
So as the story continued on Tuesday, BBC News 24 was either ahead of Sky News or level in terms of both audience share and viewers, Sky News never managed to pull ahead.
Tuesday 28th December
10h00
BBC News 24: 3.6% 176.7
Sky News: 3.1% 178.0
BBC News 24’s share was bigger than Sky’s
Tuesday 28th December
13h00
BBC News 24: 2.1% 145.0
Sky News: 2.1% 144.5
On Tuesday 28th December at 17h00 News 24 almost doubled Sky’s viewers
BBC News 24: 2.2% 257.6
Sky News: 1.1% 131.2
Remeber Live at Five is supposed to be Sky's flagship hour
Tuesday 28th December
23h00
BBC News 24: 0.8% 83.1
Sky News: 0.8% 72.0

I think thats a little harsh- looking at ratings allows us to see what everyone thinks of the coverage rather than just a few of our opinions. Its not meant to be disrespectful to the disaster.

Hey North East,
As if by magic - here is an example of the figures for the ITV News Channel based on Quarter Hour Satellite TV overnights, according to BARB.
Remember these are figures for satellite platforms so when Sky or News 24 is ahead, it's a spurious stat because it doesn't include multichannel (ie. Freeview) homes.
This is the best way to compare because ITV NC is not available on Freeview.
Figures are presented as a percentage of audience share on satellite platforms.
They aren't very good, so we'll spare blushes but:
Yesterday at 13.00
BBC News 24: 2.0% share
Sky News: 2.3% share
ITV NC:0.4%
Yesterday at 16.00
BBC News 24: 1.4% share
Sky News: 0.8% share
ITV NC:0.1% share
And just be to very scurrilous, at the same time:
QVC shopping channel: 0.2%
Smash Hits!: 0.2%
Yesterday at 22.00
BBC News 24: 0.6% share
Sky News: 0.8% share
ITV NC: 0.1% share

I should rephrase that, its not the discussion of ratings thats perhaps is inappropriate but more the use of figures as illustrated in Timmy's post to make a point. He's always trying to rubbish a particular news outlet, but to use the ratings of one of the most terrible events to occur in centurys makes me feel a little blahhh.
