The News Special has been plugged at every possible point since it was decided yesterday evening, both on One and on N24. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
Here is the full press release from bbc.co.uk/pressoffice
There will be a special programme following Sunday's earthquake disaster at 7.30pm on BBC ONE tonight (Wednesday 29 December 2004).
BBC News Special: The Great Wave will be presented by Huw Edwards in London and Jeremy Bowen in Sri Lanka.
It will include BBC correspondents from across the disaster area. John Simpson will also be contributing.
The programme will be followed by the Disasters Emergencies Committee Tsunami Earthquake Appeal.
The special programme replaces the billed programme, Only Fools and Horses.
The Disasters Emergencies Committee Tsunami Earthquake Appeal will also be broadcast at 10.15pm on BBC TWO.
BBC News Special: The Great Wave will also be shown on BBC World today (Wednesday) at 1930 GMT.

It was only a matter of time before the BBC deployed their big wigs. Edwards, Bowen and Simpson, what more could you ask for.

For them to have appeared maybe a little sooner than about five days after the event, perhaps?
Given that the disaster happened on Sunday, which was three days ago, it appears that your wish has come true. Accounting for time differences, it's still only four days.
Regardless of these semantics though, I don't think any channel - BBC, Sky, ITVNC - should be judged on the merits of how many big names it has in the region. It annoys me greatly when I see good reports from regional correspondents who are then sidelined when a bigwig like Huw Edwards muscles in to take over.
If these big names have something additional to offer the coverage, then yes, absolutely, let's go for it. But too often they seem to be shipped out for the sake of symbolism, a demonstration that the organisation is pulling out all the stops with its coverage.
I agree that the BBC coverage hasn't been as good as it could have been given the sheer volume of resources at its disposal, but I'm not sure that a bunch of well-known faces will make any difference to that.

Where the hell is our Prime Minister and why hasn't he appeared yet. It is truly outrageous that he has not made the effort to speak to the country, One would have thought he would have firstly issued his 'written' statement sooner, and by now, day 4, either come home to the UK, or made a televised statement. We've heard from Bush, when will we hear from Blair???
MO
What would he say? He's expressed his condolences, that's enough surely.

I really don't care if a prime minister talks or not, he had already send written statements , and possibly he would do that on tv soon. I am more worried about the situation that people is going through out there..I have been in florida for over 4 years now, and this past September we were hit by 4 hurricanes, one of them ,Ivan, had destructive effects here where I live. A lot of people here complained about it, but right now everything is coming back to normal. Last night I was able to go to the beach, and I just kept saying I had been very fortunate, people overthere in south Asia are suffering right now with such catastrophe, while people else were complains about the foreign aid..either saying it is too little or too much, but help is help, and they need it desperatelly right now.We complain about a lot of things, but most of us we'll have a place to sleep ,food and water, and other comodities while a lot of people there are homeless ,without food, etc. Very sad thing indeed.

Yeah I'm fully aware of that, hence why i mentioned the fact he's resleased a written statement. My point is He should have made a statement personally, televised by now.

As is customary when big stories break, BBC News 24 comes in for the ritual bashing. “Too slow, no big name presenters, bla bla”, is what is constantly shouted.
It seems the perception on these forums that Sky is better than News 24 because it sends presenters to the scene and has big flashy graphics and a quaint little ticker. Thankfully British TV viewers seem a little more discerning. It seems that they have realised that just because you have a ‘swish’ here and a ‘woosh’ there doesn’t make your coverage any better.

Here are the overnight audience ratings figures for multichannel homes.
On Sunday, December 26th at 1am the quake struck. That morning massive tsunamis and waves start to engulf coasts across central Asia.
Here are BBC News 24 v Sky's audiences, given as percentages of the audience share in multichannel homes, according to BARB
Audience figures are given in ‘000s
At 9am on Sunday morning Sky’s audience was almost double News 24’s.
BBC News 24: 2.8% 100.3
Sky News: 4.9% 198.0
However as the scope of the quake began to unfold News 24 rapidly caught up with Sky News and by noon News 24 was actually AHEAD of Sky News by an inch.
BBC News 24: 2.1% 147.2
Sky News: 2.1% 146.8
Interestingly by 15.00 on Sunday afternoon News 24 had surged ahead of Sky News, whose audience share plummeted:
BBC News 24: 1.9% 151.3
Sky News: 0.8% 65.4
By 17.00 on Sunday afternoon News 24 had consolidated its lead on Sky News which was now beginning to lag behind:
BBC News 24: 1.6% 174.7
Sky News: 0.9% 105.5
At 22.00 on Sunday evening News 24 remained ahead of Sky News in terms of numbers of viewers and share, although overall share dropped:
BBC News 24: 0.7% 95.0
Sky News: 0.6% 85.0
And the trend continues throughout Monday and Tuesday…
Remember no figures are given prior to 9am because New24 is effectively ‘Breakfast’
So at 9am on Monday 27th December Sky News was ahead
BBC News 24: 3.7% 138.3
Sky News: 5.2% 216.0
But again News 24 had taken the lead by noon
BBC News 24: 2.7% 183.9
Sky News: 2.4% 163.1
And was again ahead at 18.00
BBC News 24: 1.2% 149.3
Sky News: 1.1% 142.6
However at 22.00 on Monday evening News 24 had slipped behind Sky News
BBC News 24: 1.0% 145.4
Sky News: 1.2% 174.0
This is possibly because the 22.00 news on BBC One was late due to the Billy Connolly programme.
So as the story continued on Tuesday, BBC News 24 was either ahead of Sky News or level in terms of both audience share and viewers, Sky News never managed to pull ahead.
Tuesday 28th December
10h00
BBC News 24: 3.6% 176.7
Sky News: 3.1% 178.0
BBC News 24’s share was bigger than Sky’s
Tuesday 28th December
13h00
BBC News 24: 2.1% 145.0
Sky News: 2.1% 144.5
On Tuesday 28th December at 17h00 News 24 almost doubled Sky’s viewers
BBC News 24: 2.2% 257.6
Sky News: 1.1% 131.2
Remeber Live at Five is supposed to be Sky's flagship hour
Tuesday 28th December
23h00
BBC News 24: 0.8% 83.1
Sky News: 0.8% 72.0
