The symbols are simple, clear, and visually a bit of a design classic. (Like the Tube map)
I VERY much doubt they will ditch them - just tweak them a little (maybe even render them in 3D?) They have tweaked them a little in the past during successive graphics relaunches - but the cloud icons are such a part of the BBC Weather brand they'd be mad to lose them.
They may not animate, they may not glint, they may not rotate in 3 directions at once, but they do actually serve the purpose of telling you roughly what the weather is going to do.
If the graphics systems are basically souped-up PCs then I suspect the regions may get them (they currently have souped-up Macs) It may be that the regions have to be upgraded to the new system to allow them to access the national maps and data - which I think they can do?
