Of course, chiguy.

I mean, personally I cannot wait for SuperDoppler 6000 and the rest of the Super Doppler Storm Team to bring me up to date, sponsored by Billy's Autos where a good deal is just around the corner

My god, those Americans know how to do it.

P.S. if you thought the Super Doppler thing was a joke...

Symbols aren't meant not to be boring. There not designed to be "exciting", the BBC symbols are probably the best on UK TV. Clear, coherant, recognisable and suitable. I cant stand the tacky animations as seen on GMTV.

Too simplistic. I think a compreshenive and concise forcast is better than some lame symbols that dont really mean anything and usually wrong. I prefer to see radar and sattelite fly-overs and 3D animations instead of some lame symbols from 1970. Its 2004 and I'm glad the BBC finally realize that and are ungrading.

There would be no consistancy - no recognisability at all.
Symbols should be developed (as DAS said like the Tube), and matured (like a fine port Wink ) That way they are modern as well as being consistant.
Flashy symbols don't make good forecasts.

A constant source of surprise.

Yeah because it would be terrible if a flash flood occured or people got trapped in their cars because the area was flood out because of too much rain. Those little symbols have got it going on.

As we all know, the Cornish flash floods were caused by the BBC's weather graphics - and NOT the unexpected covergence suggested by those morons with the satellites.

All the more reason to get rid of them. Can't have them causing trouble now can we.

Why do you always try to be funny when you are criticised?

Not that a Doppler would offer anyone anything of use whatsoever in a flood situation, given that their range is exceptionally limited and by the time the Doppler had picked up severe weather it would already be raining on someone in the forecast area...

You see, chiguy, Dopplers are rather pointless pieces of equipment. All they do is tell people where it is raining at the moment and (sometimes) the windspeeds at the moment... I would hazard a guess that if people wanted to know whether it was raining at the present moment in time they would look out of their windows, not turn on the television.

The fact that chiguy consistently fails to read a post past six or seven or so words suggests to me that he is a slow reader goldfish.

And I'm certain you are aware of how they are work because you've been a severe weather situation in which they were used. Rolling Eyes

The WSR-88D uses Doppler radar technology to:

Substantially increase tornado warning lead time.
Improve the detection and measurement of damaging winds, severe turbulence, wind shear and hail storms.
Improve the forecast of the location and severity of thunderstorms.
Increase the accuracy of identifying areas that are threatened.
Substantially reduce the number of incorrect forecasts and false alarms.
Increase the accuracy of rainfall estimates for flash flood warnings.
Improve water resource management and river flood forecasts.
