Michael Fish is retiring in the autumn, before the new graphics come in.

What, you mean partially obscure the new graphics with the old ones, so nobody can tell what's going on?
I'm sure if Michael Fish is going to be able to cope with it, then the rest of Britain's elderly population will. Anyone would've thought it was a fundamental lifestyle change.

Well I've not seen them but we've been giving away magnetic symbols at the News and Sport on Tour and a certain weather person who was there said they will become collectors items as those symbols are going. Now how radical they will be who knows but it seems pointless to me bringing in loads of new 3d stuff and then sticking with the old symbols that have been around for ever.

I see MediaGuardian.co.uk have picked up on this now:

It does sound as though the graphics will be radically different. Maybe they'll just incorporate the old symbols in the summary at the end.

The BBC article does say the symbols are going? Maybe I read it wrong but people seem to believe it says they're staying.

I think if you watch the whole of the TVNZ weather report you will see how the existing symbols will fit in with the new look.
They are not going to be able to provide stunningly accurate cloud cover representations of 4 days in advance... so for that, they will use the old symbols to give a rough idea of what to expect for the day ahead.
As far as I have seen, the 3D flyovers etc. are only good for the day they are done on, and the day after that... they aren't going to be able to produce one for a week ahead, because they won't have data that accurate.

In fact things are about to improve there - when the Met Office opened their new place in Exeter this year they fired up a new supercomputer, theoretically it will improve forecast accuracy in the week-ahead-ish timeframe.
Well in theory.
Of course there'll never be a hurricane in England. Awww I'll miss Fish, I think he's fab - king of the smoking jacket that he was wearing the other day!
