Ah, apologies - I've re-read what I wrote, and when I said 'years prior to the launch of a British news channel', I intended to say 'years prior to the launch of their British news channel. I've corrected that now - I was merely trying to show the progression from radio to international TV to domestic TV.
That's a valid argument...
...That isn't - you're saying that the competition is starting to do something the Beeb is doing, so the BBC will have to change and do something different? The BBC try to offer analysis all day, as they break the news - with varying levels of success. That seems different to having dedicated analytical slots in the evening - which, I guess, are similar to Newsnight, so we'd better cancel that as well.
That's something I completely agree with. But equally, Nick Pollard should stop saying that there's no value in news channels that don't break news as quickly as Sky.
Since we've had this discussion before, and we're cleary never going to convince each other, that's probably for the best.

re: Five Live - I was just correcting your comment that Five Live was around long before any British rolling news channel.

But they aren't different enough in my eyes.

When Sky launches its new evening line up, they're not even going to have a claim to being ''the analysis channel'', so yet again they'll be back to wondering what they're supposed to do.

But I do wish Roger - snore - Mosley would give up on making his sentiments clear that every channel that isn't as austere and slow-paced as News 24 must, by default, be frightfully bad and 'pleb news' that gets it wrong all the time.
