That would be seen as a demotion, there's no way Huw is giving up the Ten O'Clock News gig.
Why demotion? The political editor is the top gig in terms of British journalism, highly regarded post, and i'm sure there wouln't be a pay cut for him.
EDIT -And why would BBC insiders mention him if there wasn't a possibility of him either going for it or getting it?
My rearranged BBC:
Political Editor - Huw Edwards
Chief Political Correspondent - Martha Kearney (presuming Mark Mardell goes to Brussels)
Ten O'Clock News - George Alagiah or Fiona Bruce
Six O'Clock News - Dermot Murnaghan and Sophie Raworth
Breakfast - Natasha Kaplinksy and Simon McCoy (I would like it to be Bill and Sian fulltime but sadly don't see that happening)
What would everyone else like to see?

As i've said in another thread i think that Huw Edwards would be a good replacement - already known to viewers, and was good when he was a political correspondant before - it would also allow a bit of a shake up for the BBC 1 News presenting team.
