As i've said in another thread i think that Huw Edwards would be a good replacement - already known to viewers, and was good when he was a political correspondant before - it would also allow a bit of a shake up for the BBC 1 News presenting team.

That would be seen as a demotion, there's no way Huw is giving up the Ten O'Clock News gig.

Why demotion? The political editor is the top gig in terms of British journalism, highly regarded post, and i'm sure there wouln't be a pay cut for him.

EDIT -And why would BBC insiders mention him if there wasn't a possibility of him either going for it or getting it?

My rearranged BBC:
Political Editor - Huw Edwards
Chief Political Correspondent - Martha Kearney (presuming Mark Mardell goes to Brussels)
Ten O'Clock News - George Alagiah or Fiona Bruce
Six O'Clock News - Dermot Murnaghan and Sophie Raworth
Breakfast - Natasha Kaplinksy and Simon McCoy (I would like it to be Bill and Sian fulltime but sadly don't see that happening)

What would everyone else like to see?

Didn't know BBC insiders mentioned his name, had no idea that political correspondent was such a prized gig. However, I would argue that to the populus a news anchor job on the main BBC bulletin has more prestige than a reporter.

Your right - political correspondant isn't a big gig, but political editor is. There wasn't this much fuss when the post of Home Editor was created.

Can see your point about the average Joe Bloggs would perhaps see presenter as bigger gig - but who cares what they think?

As for "scottish's" rejig - I would be keen to put Kirsty Wark and George Alagiah on the Ten. Fiona IMO doesn't cut it on the Ten, but can't see her moving.

Yeah, I don't really like Fiona on the Ten either but I think that she, like Natasha, is unlikely to be moved. As Fiona usually only presents the news once or twice a week it's not that big a deal anyway. But it is a shame that Kirsty is hardly ever on Newsnight nowadays - it always seems to be Jeremy or Gavin.

Good to read that Peter Sissons will be back on BBC 1 during the summer with an hour of news and current affairs all to himself!!

Any gravitas the 'Ten' had was lost when Peter Sissons and Michael Buerk left. I'd keep Alagiah away from it and all bulletins and send him back to reporting. He reads the news like he's talking to small children, even Newsround isn't that condescending!!

Well I think Geogres stint is drawing to a close. I would personally move him over to BBC World and have a few of them over on the National and News 24 ( Stephen Cole, Lndsey Douchet, Anita McNaught and Lucy Horcking ) to mention a few...
The BBC now really needs to restore some "impact" as I've heard it called.
Rumours about this pool of presenters have again surfaced which has had me wondering if there is actually any truth to them....

I cannot see Huw Edwards getting the job. As a news presenter or reporter fine, but he has never shown himself as having an astute political mind. He simply hasn't the experience either for this key position.

Being News24 chief political correspondent, and being a general political correspondent during the Major years not experienced enough?

He did say in an interview he would love to go back to politcal reporting and the top post surely fits the bill, as he would unlikely become just a general political reporter.

What exactly are these rumours about a pool of presenters? Sounds like this pool has become stagnant and is in need of draining!!!

Draining? No need its evaporated at this rate.
Basically A few months ago there was a this idea of a "pool of presenters" rather than a fixed set. I had cast this off but yesterday when talking to a few friends that phrase "pool of presenters" came up. So is there plans or just hot air?

Rather funny comments but the point is there. The last I heard about this presenter pool was back before the N24 reshuffle.
