Yes, that is a good idea. Putting John Stapleton as Trevor McDonald's successor is brilliant. But I bet ITN/ITV News will be reluctant to put someone of his age on as a regular anchor - isn't he about 58?
What I would like to see again [but definitely won't] is to see a rota of regular anchors that ITN did for their News At Ten programme for 25 years.

Sorry foilks, but Andrea is a mid ranage newscaster, and certainly not good enough to replace Trevor. She has an awful annoying PERMANENT SMILE, even when she is delivering horrific news on the Tsumani for example. She wasn't any good on 5 news and she isn't getting any better on ITV news. Her reporting skills however are among the best on ITV News.
Give the job to someone who deserves it - KATIE DERHAM.

Steve Scott? You must be joking. He is mogadon (?) man!
This line-up would give some of the NC presenters which currently only do the Weekend News to shine on ITV1, especially Steve Scott and Leyla Daybelge on the Evening News.

As a man in the know who has recently discussed this with many of the head honchos at ITN they seem to favour a new face from another channel. The hot favourite at the moment is Sky's Jeremy Thompson who spent many years at ITN as Chief sports correspondent and as a highly regarded news reporter. He is a friend of David Mannion.
There is no way Andrea Catherwood would go onto News at 10.30 she has effectively been sidelined with the arrival of Nina Hossain.

Jeremy Thompson??? I cant see that happening. He is on far too much money at Sky, and as their STAR presenter, I would have thought they'd move heaven and earth to keep him if he were approached by ITV.
And as for him being a friend of Mannion - well so is Alastair Stewart, a very good friend, and I can't see him moving back to ITV News either.

That's basically it. The next sentence goes on to say how she hates ski-ing because of an incident 16 yrs ago. It was very brief in a column of TV news - and usually I'm sceptical, but this just made sense to me.
Re: Trevor. I agree he's very over-rated and not the best newsreader at all, so I guess the respect comes from his journalist skills.
As I said in my opening post I can't see anyone else from within ITV News as a more suitable successor. Mark Austin is the obvious choice, but moving to 10.30pm would mean broadcasting to 2 million less viewers.
The other option is they poach someone. I doubt they'd get anyone from Sky as they don't have a profile outside Sky News (before you reply, believe me they don't - even though I've had Sky News for a year I couldn't name one newsreader!).
The Channel 4 team are rather settled and although Rob Butler is out of a job with Five News, he just wouldn't be right. I always thought Charlie Stayt would be good on the Evening News, but that means Mark taking over - and I guess Charlie would be with Sky for the next year anyhow.
The return of Dermot Murnaghan has been mentioned - he was superb when at ITV News. However, I think the best person from BBC News would be George Aligiah. He's a respected journalist and is wasted on the Six o'clock News, which doesn't have the profile of the later 10pm bulletin.
I think he'd work really with his own ITV News bulletin - he's heavyweight enough to cover stories like the Tsunami, War and politics - but also has a similar accessibility to Nicholas Owen with the more light hearted stories.
Back to Andrea Catherwood - I like her alot as a newsreader and admit she would be a surprise choice. The obvious thing is Mark moves to 10.30pm, Nicholas to 6.30pm and Andrea to the Lunchtime News (although I do like the idea of the Evening News being female fronted!).
Whoever gets the job will hopefully play a bigger role on the ITV News Channel. I think it would be an excellent scheduling move to put the host of the 10.30pm bulletin on the ITV News Channel for an hour at 7pm, immediately after the Evening News. I do think the mainstream viewer would be much more likely to turnover to see Trevor McDonald than random newsreader #46.

It aint National News is it! I know exactly what Alastair does on the News Channel, but he aint back on National News and he wont be either. Agreed, he is probably the network's choice as anchor for the forthcoming Election, but that's about it I reckon.
