I know I might have started the ball rolling with this pointless/non-pointless debate, but I feel that there is no need to keep arguing or agreeing with one another as it ironically increases the pointlessness and increases the likelihood of the thread being closed!

All that I am saying is that I can't see it working; what is eligible for dicussion etc., and it is not, in my opinion, efficient, as there is the possibility of ten issues being discussed at once, and therefore the whole thread ending up as a mess.

Those who agree with the thread remaining open though; by all means, continue with your discussion, I don't mean to spoil your party!

Why can't we just end thread moderation?

You should be able to start a thread on however meaningless, minute or even miniscule a detail as long as it's related to news (NOTE- not only news presentation).

You then allow the forum to moderate itself by the simple rule of "sink or swim".

If the minute detail is really boring and pointless, the thread will be ignored and sink to the bottom of the page. If it's interesting it'll be picked up.

I personally think this a pointless thread whose aims are misguided and won't work, and that it should sink quickly*.

It shouldn't however be closed or locked.

So simple.

* I realise that by posting I'm defeating my aims, but I think this is the best solution to these repeated "about the forum itself" discussions.

Points taken. I thought - at the time of creating the thread - that we needed a simple "catch-all" thread as a home for the silly or short running subjects that often crop up and sometimes receive zero or minimal replies.

Can one of the mods bin this thread?

Not really - this thread could eaily be changed slightly for say everyone's favourite And Finally's. Know what I mean?

I'm only saying this because I admit I have posted two pointless threads - without actually thinking first. So, I'm trying to correct this.

I have to agree with the posters saying this is a pointless thread. It's quite simple:

If your post will fit comfortably into an existing thread, then please post it in there. If you are in doubt or feel it is more important than to be just posted in a general thread, then create a new thread. I know some people who aren't interested in the day-to-day goings on of, for example, ITV News might well be interested in a major piece of news regarding ITV News. If you think a subject is very important and might be interesting to more members, then feel free to create a new thread.
