They’ve been trying to phase Alastair out - losing the EN, being used on weekends etc. This might’ve just been an easy way for him to go.

It might have been easier to have not announced it or get him to say he was retiring.

I’d strongly expect him to either turn up on Times Radio, or the 1-4 slot on talkRADIO - as Matthew Wright announced he’s leaving today.

He announced they're getting rid of him!

I did wonder if that was a co-incidence, certainly interensting timing

I wonder if it’s a cost saving thing at talkRADIO.

A strange co-incidence that he’s saying they’re getting rid of him the week after Eamonn Holmes also announces his departure (to be replaced by someone already employed by NewsUK!). They’ve got to be the 2 highest paid presenters?

Then again, with my own reasoning above, is Alistair with 40 years experience also too much of a high earner. Maybe Times Radio is a better fit.

Has it actually been confirmed he was sacked, as the impression I get from some articles is he chose to step down after these complaints?

A very big loss for ITV, and certainly will be missed however. Always rated him more than Mark Austin.

He wasn't an employee so not technically sacked per see.

It’s heartbreaking that a 40 odd year career at ITN has ended this way.

He wasn't at ITN for 40 years, he left in 1992 and came back in 2004

Maybe he’ll end up back with the regions or with another News provider. Eitherway this can’t be the way it ends for such a distinguished newsreader.

I think it is unlikely he'll be back reading the news on TV. He didn't have a regular gig at ITV and was doing radio and other stuff too. Probably won't wasn't going back to a full time job anyway.

As I mentioned a couple of pages back The Times are launching a radio station in a few months, a sister station of Talk Radio which he presents on. I reckon he'll be on there

From what I've read about Times Radio, I doubt he'd fit in there even before today's news. I very much doubt they'll be promoting themselves as a sister of "Talk Radio" either. It's going for a very niche upmarket ABC1 "remainer/woke" style audience. I doubt they'd hire someone who has left under a cloud involving racism.

Whilst looking up info on the BBC News cuts I saw an FT journalist say he was getting suspended and then a few minutes later we heard he was stepping down so probably suspended and then resigned

I believe the difference between Piers and others is that Good Morning Britain isn't classed as a News programme. I believe it comes under Current Affairs and therefore the show and it's presenters are covered by different guidelines.

If they both worked for the same company then there would be no difference - a social media policy applies to everyone.

They don't, but the decision was taken by both ITN and ITV so I imagine there could be some pressure on Piers Morgan

Or Alastair Stewart will now be added to the relief presenters on GMB.

Bit more context to those tweets, you can clearly see the Shakespeare quotes were aimed at him being incorrect and not racist.

Exactly, but no time for thought - just make the kneejerk reaction and react to those who shout loudest. Just as people can be ignorant when causing offence they can also be ignorant when taking offence too.
