First things first, Alastair Stewart was one of the great modern-day newscasters - so in that sense it's sad to see him go.
This decision if it is based on the tweet we think it is seems to be cancel culture at its worst (as much as I dislike these sorts of terms). The tweet was perhaps a mistake and could be taken the wrong way but I was expecting something a lot more offensive for Alastair Stewart to be removed. It was a Shakespeare quote at the end of the day and nowhere near as bad as say the image that did for Danny Baker. It felt the sort of thing that maybe deserved an investigation and slap on the wrist but hardly forcing him out. Especially when it's clear from the many tributes he's getting on social media that he's a much-respected, much-loved colleague.
The optics do seem a bit odd that ITV got rid of him over this but he was kept on despite drink driving offences which are arguably just as serious and could've put actual lives at risk.
I have to say too that ITV throwing out an esteemed presenter like Alastair but keeping the odious Piers Morgan doesn't sit well with me. Just look for example at how compared to the rest of the ITV network, Piers talks about those with mental health issues. And that's without mentioning the NOTW British Soldiers front page, having reporters stalk people he doesn't like and the pretty-much vendetta he has against some people for little to no reason (Alistair Cook and Arsene Wenger for example)
I do wonder sometimes why famous people bother with Twitter - these days it just seems to all anger and vile and people just waiting for you to slip up and that it's only a matter of time until they try to 'cancel' you.
Sad and annoying. The person he tweeted is a pathetic bully for abusing the racial PC card like that.
Oh, come on. He drew attention to a problematic tweet that a professional anchor should not have posted. His bosses -- not the person making the compliant -- looked at the evidence and decided to terminate Stewart's employment. As for "political correctness," the obsession over "PC culture" tends to come from people who have racist attitudes but who resent the fact that sharing those attitudes often has consequences in polite society.
I believe the difference between Piers and others is that Good Morning Britain isn't classed as a News programme. I believe it comes under Current Affairs and therefore the show and it's presenters are covered by different guidelines.
Technically correct but GMB could easily be perceived to be an ITV News programme due to the amount of ITV News branding they plaster everywhere.
I appreciate that this particular screenshot is during the 'news' segment of the show, but the screens behind Charlotte here remain displaying this branding throughout, as well as physical ITV News branding engraved into the set, and logos appearing on the majority of their graphics. With Piers' rants, I'm surprised this hasn't weakened the credibility of the ITV News brand.
Piers gets away with what he likes on Twitter and the programme itself, yet one foot wrong for Alastair and he's shown the door.

Just because "most people" believe that something is not racist, it doesn't mean that it isn't -- especially since many people hold racist views themselves. (Racist views tend to correlate with greater age and lower education.) Ask a member of a minority community what they perceive as racist -- that, at the end of the day, is what matters.

Has Piers had an official complaint from an anti racist charity?

True - but it doesn't mean this won't make even more people think a bit more racist- as all the recent culture war issues have done - people are simply made more polarized.

.
Indeed GMB seems to have a 'cake and eat it' approach - when they want to be they're a part of the ITV news brand (including putting the ITV news logo all across the screen) but when it suits, e.g. when Piers rants, they're suddenly not a news show.
Some interesting points being made here in the argument against Piers. It’s a strange one also, but Piers is almost always on the wind up in a “shock jock” way. Whereas Alistair made a small mis-judgement.
I’d strongly expect him to either turn up on Times Radio, or the 1-4 slot on talkRADIO - as Matthew Wright announced he’s leaving today.
