Staff gathered outside BBC buildings again today; a big screen outside TV Centre carried pictures from a similar gathering in Gaza.

Lyse Doucet introduced the vigil on News 24 and World, followed by a short speech from Mark Thompson and a few moments' silence.

Advert in Guardian today with a list of names calling for Alan Johnston to be freed.

bbc.co.uk posted:
David Dimbleby, Sir David Frost, Jon Snow and Christiane Amanpour of CNN are among hundreds of Mr Johnston's friends and colleagues who backed a full-page advert in Monday's Guardian newspaper.

"It could have been any of us," Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow told the BBC. "We have to stand together against this."

Other signatories include:

BBC Director-General, Mark Thompson
Director of channels at Channel 4, Kevin Lygo
Editors of several London newspapers
Wadah Khanfar, editor-in-chief of Arabic TV network al-Jazeera

Interesting to see who's missing from the list. Couldn't see anyone from Sky News and Matthew Amroliwallah wasn't there (the only regular News 24 presenter missing as far as I could see). Perhaps they were just busy!?

Adam Boulton is listed.

Nor is Moira Stuart, although, she's not a ''journalist'' now, is she? Crying or Very sad I can't help but feel slightly amused when I see Natasha Kaplinsky in the list. I can just imagine somebody bringing her a piece of paper and her seeing it as something to boost her public image and to shine her halo.
EDIT: Have just seen Sky Presenter Kay Burley.

First name on the list - Adam Boulton.

At a quick scan, I also spotted Dominic Waghorn, Emma Hurd, Kay Burley, John Ryley(!), Tim Marshall...

This will be tomorrow, Thursday, at 1430BST, being carried by BBC World, BBC News 24, Sky News, and Al Jazeera, CNN yet to confirm I believe. Jeremy Bowen will anchor in the Middle East, with Adam Boulton from the Foreign Office. Sky will take 15 minutes of this half hour programme.

This is in several threads at the moment, and seeing as it's X network, we can't have a discussion in every single thread, can we.

Seeing it's about the kidnap of Alan Johnston, I think it makes sense to keep things here. If the thread needs to be renamed, so be it. But it would be rediculous having discussion in numerous threads.

Why?

- They wouldn't do this if it was an ordinary aid worker or something?

- They didn't do it for the 15 sailors held in Iran!

Yes, of course the BBC are concerned - but using their channels - and others - in this way is an abuse of their position.

They've spent the last three weeks slagging off Iranian State TV for thier propaganda etc. - is this really any different?

They didn't do it for the Iranians kidnapping as they knew where the sailors were and what was happening. We haven't heard about Alan since he went missing so there is obviously more concern about that.
