I wonder if New Zealand's DTT, which is the only other country to have AJE HD has the same issue?

Nice set being used tonight for Super Tuesday coverage - really reminds me of the London studio. Lovely views!

What the? So they have no money for Al Jazeera America to continue in New York but are able to build this set in Washington just to be used for a few months coverage on the US election...

Is that AJ's Washington newsroom?! Its massive!

Felicity did say it was Al Jazeera's Washington HQ so I assume it is - and its certainly a new one, judging by the size of it and the design of the set, which is very much like the London studio. I actually thought it was the London studio at first.

I also assume that this Washington set is shared, judging by the size of it - used for Al Jazeera English and Al Jazeera Arabic. Just a guess though.

Maybe this is a sign that they are going to bring back bulletins from Washington DC. After all, you wouldn't spend the money on a brand new set, if you weren't going to use it regularly.

It always bemuses me how some people here talk about studio sets as of they're the most expensive important bit of a TV station. This is a company that pissed away $40 (correction) million on a lease on a Manhatten office they never even fitted out, they wouldn't be worried about a few bits of plywood and perspex.

AJ DC has been due a move virtually from the day the station opened. Last I heard they were due to move to the Newseum, which is where I assume that studio is. Presumably the studio /set was planned to be for AJ America

Isn't Al Jazeera Amera it's own private company? I wonder if they will be able to write down or sublet the lease.

Sets are an expensive bit with new ones here upwards of $750,000 on construction and materials alone. Building a whole new plant is another ball park.

Just to put it to perspective here's the details and cost when my local NBC station (it's the only one I have info on) they did the studio rebuild, essentially a "green installation" of all new wires, with brand new equipment (the camera robots were replaced shortly after), the computer servers needed, associated building equipment (HVAC, power, power back up. All together in a broadcast engineering article the chief engineer stated that they were lucky to do it all at once rather than slowly incorporating HD equipment. The engineer said it cost them a couple million but below $10M and that was what was spent to get the tv station on air. The rest of the building and its radio studios were also renovated.

Sorry, it was reported to be $45 million just to get out of the lease. According to one report I read no one from AJ had even been there

That Election studio is not up to AJE's usual standards. Also it looks like different designs have been thrown together at the end of a newsroom.

The set looks nice in the wide shots, but less so on the individual close-ups - lots of dark, generic-looking office space.

It's a shame they're no longer on Freeview SD. I can't also understand why Talking Pictures is on Freeview HD but not SD when there's so much tosh (i.e. shopping/jewellery) instead. Sorry, I'm going off-topic...put me in the naughty corner.

Talking Pictures isn't in HD, but it's on a DVB-T2 multiplex so you need a HD-capable receiver to get it.
