why do news 24 persist with showing abc world news? although it is always introduced as a look at the world through american eyes, it rarely ever even comes close to that. tonight the only stories outside of the US were iraq and the and finally about people living longer. hardly a look at the world.

i understand that bbc news has an agreement with abc and the fact it is a domestic news bulletin [all be it with a misleading rather grandiose name], and like our news at ten it has an understandable domestic bias.

so why then do news 24 continue to show it? surely america must have an international news bulletin, somewhere, that would be worth showing? if not - why not try DWTV or even al jazeera english?

I think it's more for people just to see the news in America rather than the international news from an American prospective. It's the same with Sky News carrying CBS News, which is mainly American news. That and I'm sure it gets viewers. I know a lot of people from the American Air Bases in this area, and I know many of them set their Sky+ boxes to record ABC World News and CBS News from BBC News 24 and Sky News respectively.

I think they are right to show it and it only fills an overnight slot anyhow.

However, perhaps also overnight they should be showing some bulletins from other parts of the world as well.

What bugs me though is the dual presenter transatlantic format of World Business Report - it adds little to the show and certainly doesn't justify the cost of the set up involved.

I record ABC World News every night. I like to find out what's going on in America - something which you don't find out by watching British news programmes/channels. I'm not watching it for an American perspective of the world. I'm watching it to find out American domestic news.

Don't Sky show CBS news overnight as well?

Yep, 12.30am and I think there is a 5.30am repeat too. CNBC also shows the NBC Nightly News at 11.30pm our time, which I think is a Live simulcast, although there tends to be alot of adverts within the programme.

If you had read the second post you would have realised I already said "It's the same with Sky News carrying CBS News".

From Dictionary.com:

Prospective: Potential, likely, or expected: A prospective partner .

Perspective: The state of one's ideas, the facts known to one (etc), in having a meaningful interrelationship: You have to live here a few years to see local conditions in perspective .

I hope this is helpful Smile

It is. I knew the difference already, I just wasn't thinking at the time and wrote the wrong thing.

Most American news outlets and programming concentrate so heavily on domestic issues that one can quite easily get the impression from it that the only country that exists on the planet is America. Go by Fox News alone, everybody outside the US is evil.

International news is often only presented when it involves American personnel, something that could affect America, or when any senior politician has been flown outside of America. Apart from that, you're lucky if it gets mentioned at all.

Thanks very much for pointing out that the NBC Nightly News is broadcast on CNBC. I never realised this and I've always wanted to watch NBC News at home - I watched it several times while in Boston last September and thought it was rather good. Thanks again.

On the subject of the American news output's agenda, what do people think about CNN? Living in the UK, I can only watch CNN International and they seem quite balanced with their agenda, on the whole. Obviously Iraq plays a large role on CNN Intl, but it does on BBC World as well. Whilst it can be said CNN Intl does focus on some American stories, it can also be argued that BBC World has a British slant. This evening, BBC World were reporting on the Big Brother row, for instance. My question is really with regards to CNN US - what's their agenda like? Is it similar to Fox News? Or does CNN US include more international news as well?

I haven't seen much of CNN US myself, but what I've seen it is more US centric, but still contains a selection of international stories from CNN Intl.
