NEW YORK, April 5, 2005 -- ABC News "World News Tonight" anchor Peter Jennings has been diagnosed with lung cancer, and will begin outpatient treatment next week.

Jennings is expected to continue anchoring the news during the chemotherapy "to the extent he can do so comfortably," ABC News President David Westin wrote in an e-mail today to the network's news staff. Charlie Gibson, Elizabeth Vargas and others will be substituting for Peter as necessary.

Peter Jennings Diagnosed With Lung Cancer
April 5, 2005

Good afternoon.

Many of you may have learned earlier today about news concerning Peter Jennings' health. The following story was posted on ABCNEWS.com today:

ABC News "World News Tonight" anchor Peter Jennings has been diagnosed with lung cancer, and will begin outpatient treatment next week.

Jennings is expected to continue anchoring the news during the chemotherapy, ABC News President David Westin wrote in an e-mail today to the network's news staff. Charlie Gibson, Elizabeth Vargas and others will be substituting for Peter as necessary.

"He's already bringing to this new challenge the courage and strength we've seen so often in his reporting from the field and in anchoring ABC News," Westin wrote.

Jennings told "World News Tonight" senior staffers about his illness today.

"Almost 10 million Americans are living with cancer," Jennings wrote. "I am sure I will learn from them how to cope with the facts of life that none of us anticipated."

Poor bloke - a genuinely good egg....

ah yes, I see him on the News 24 1am opt-outs sometimes. Poor bloke.

Reminds me of when the late Helen Rollason continued to do Sports News for the BBC.

is the word "programme" not technical sounding enough these days?

I like the term "opt-out" though, Mr VAT Crime.

As used, it gives that cosy thought that the USA is just a "region" of the UK.

Don't tell Rev Dublya, though, I suspect he thinks it's still the other way round!

Slightly odd (but probably courageous) decision to continue working.

Unless he has a very rare form of lung cancer (certain types are not linked to smoking for example), his prognosis is unbelievably poor. It's also perhaps worth pointing out that chemotherapy is never curative in lung cancer- it's life extending but really by not very long. The use of chemotherapy also suggests the presence (based on the 'average' lung caner patient) of particularly destructive small cell lung cancer. If this is true, then life expectancy is incredibly short- I'm therefore a bit surprised that such a rich man doesn't just kick it all in and spend his money and remaining time with his family and friends. Or perhaps that's just what I would do.

I fell asleep in front of the TV last night and woke up when I heard him announce on TV he had lung cancer. He blamed it on the fact that he used to smoke. His voice sounded awful last night

DS has a news item about Jennings. He's written a letter to his viewers - DS quotes it in full.

Chris.
