That looks like it's being broadcast from a broom cupboard!

Here's a before-and-after comparison of the 7PM ABC News for Victoria (the evening news on ABC1 is produced separately in each Australian state and territory, but the look is the same everywhere):

Thats a pretty common set up for a lot of ABC State Bulletins

That set used for the launch isn't part of ABC News 24. It was just a special setup in a studio for the first hour launch.
Some caps of the main set are below. They've also got a setup in part of the newsroom that they've been using for news updates during the afternoon, and another area on the main set (not seen in these caps) that looks into the control room. That window is just to the right of where the sport standup is located.

Any pics of the set - how does the desk set fit in with the big screen they used for the opening?

I think ABC News 24 looks superb, we've needed a free-to-air news channel for a VERY long time, especially since there's a Federal Election campaign underway.
Apparently the State and Territory bulletins will get a new set later.

Studio is alright, but graphics are terrible. Something like the early noughties. Logo nothing to scream about either.

For me it's just the opposite: Except for the clunky logo, I like the graphics, which seem elegant to me, but the set leaves me underwhelmed. Of course, simple sets can be very effective and graceful, but this one seems oddly bland and flat, especially for a 24-hour news channel.
(For the record, THIS is what I would consider a good-looking contemporary set.)

Compared though with most Aussie news studios - and indeed directly with Sky - it is leagues ahead. Some might argue it's a good thing but compared to what we're used too Australian news sets seem to be very simple and very traditional, though I guess having to produce five bulletins rather than one national bulletin has forced them to hold back from experimenting with more hi-tech studios.

I think the Sky News Australia set could be improved a great deal by introducing a few features that the British one has, the led bar lights and some blue panelling.
Sky News Australia's newsroom is like all its walls are painted black and is very dark, and I believe its not that old?
