No - it wasn't originally widescreen. Pipeline broadcasts everything in 16:9, so the picture's stretched at the edges. Not too badly done - although might have just been better to use the original format.
The stretching hasn't been that obvious until just now, when they started using a ticker on screen.
Incidentally, after they put the ticker up on September 11th, 2001, it never went away.

The first collapse wasn't live on CNN (they were showing footage of the Pentagon) but here it is a few seconds later:

Well, we didn't have News 24 then and I remember my mum saying they showed the second plane hit the second tower live on BBC One?
Strange to think that exactly this time 5 years ago I was in an after school drama class and we spent pretty much the whole session discussing the the tragic event. Also my mate's brother died that day (not related to 9/11) so it was a depressing day all round.

BBC1 broke the news right after Neighbours - by which time both towers had been hit.

As shown with my clip above, BBC 1 joined News 24 after Neighbours for several hours.

Looking at Russ's clip, it seems the confusion comes from that BBC1 replayed the second tower hitting shortly after they started the news simulcast.
A bit like the Challenger disaster in 1986 - loads of people swear they saw it live on Newsround, but it actually happened about 15 minutes earlier, and they used a recording of it to open the show.

Ok, thanks. I first heard when ITV broke the news after the first part of Crossroads.
Those who were in TV Forum chat on the 10th September will remember we all pretended to get on a plane. Which then crashed.
And Asa reuploaded the original 9/11 thread earlier this year, at http://www.tvforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/sept11.cgi .
