I just discovered the 7 o'clock News last week and it's brilliant, an innovative, different news programme. It's clearly lighter and more humorous, but at the same time doesn't seem dumbed down - it just appeals to a different audience. I really like it.
And Paddy O'Connell is a brilliant presenter - he seems extremely laid back, yet his interviews are strangely incisive and quite engaging. Is Eddie Mair still the permanent presenter of the bulletin, and if so, is he as good as Paddy?
Last time Eddie was on his hols, and Paddy had to have a day off, Chris Eakin was brought in. But how do people round here think that Steven Cole might fare as a fill-in?

Watched The 7 O Clock news for the first time today (partially through the reccommendation of this thread, partially because I was at home and was able to)
It is actually quite good. Great to see Paddy back on TV (he turned up on 5 live the other night as a guest alongside Janet Ellis of all people). Amazed me how many live guests they had - Jon Ronson, James O'Brien and a woman whose name I didn't catch.... as well as a couple of down the lines.
Is it me, or was the start of tonight's programme a little different from usual?
They started off plugging the Valentine's Day item (which is the 'and finally' story), with some scratchy hip-hop in the background. Then, the headlines, fade out the music, and cut to Eddie, for the first story. No sting, and no sting halfway through the programme either. Sting at the end, though.
I have to say though, the introduction Eddie did to the Valentine's story has to be the funniest thing I've ever seen on TV.
"This is the only thing on BBC Three right now. Mmmmmm."

There were different openings last week as well. I think they are trying to be less formulaic.
Eddie's intro to the Valentine's day item was very funny...
