Why on earth on Sunday are they breaking for an hour to show an ancient repeat of All Star Mr and Mrs at 12.00pm? Surely they have more presenters who could cover this one hour if Colette wanted an hour off on lunch?

Otherwise a reasonable amount of election coverage alternative to RTE One.

I see they kept Dancing on Ice at 6pm - must be a money earner for them in advertising, otherwise this could have been shunted to Virgin Media Two for one week - even RTE's home grown Dancing with the Stars has moved to a Saturday for one week only.

In fairness I think that’s a big increase on the amount of coverage that TV3 had of previous elections. I’ll still watch RTE’s coverage for the most part but I’ll watch the bits of the Virgin Media coverage that don’t clash with RTE on Saturday night and Monday. I do welcome the fact that it offers the public a genuine choice of coverage in English for the first time really.

If only Virgin Media would put more effort into their online news service, which is still lacking compared to RTE News online.

With election results coming in and analysis, I would have thought they would have changed their online news output - they haven't.

Basically just video clips of news bulletins and stories, and that is it.

How do you think coverage would be if ITV still owned UTV/the Channel 3 License?

ITV do own UTV <confused>?

Or do you mean UTV Ireland? They only owned that for a short bit. As it happened the last general election occurred while UTV Ireland existed (three days before it was bought by ITV, in fact). My recollection is that UTV Ireland were scheduled to 3x30 minute election specials (they didn’t normally do news at weekends) but this might not have been what was actually aired.

UTV Ireland was never going to last. Virgin Media had their eyes on an Irish television station for a long time.

Given that, if UTV Ireland had have continued to be owned by ITV plc, we can safely say ITV would have rebranded it and got a new name, and invested some money into their news output, just as VM has today.

The problem for me is their online news resources is piss poor compared to RTE. Virgin Media could do more, as we are constantly told people get their news now from online sources, online articles, it seems VM Ireland just do not want to provide that service, and leave it totally to RTE.

Just take a look at the two different news sites from the two broadcasters and see for yourself how crap an online news source Virgin Media Ireland is:

RTE - https://www.rte.ie/news/

Virgin Media Ireland - https://www.virginmediatelevision.ie/player/show/1513/0/0/

Hint: Virgin Media Ireland have a "News" section banner, but they may as well call it "Go to RTE News Online" banner

Will Virgin Media have a special election results set? I would have thought they were going to use the VM News Hub as their election coverage isn’t normally as high-profile as RTÉ’s.

They will use the 5,000 Sq Ft main studio as the main election studio with their news hub studio as back up to it I guess. They only have two studios.

You guess - just as I'd guess considering it's only in the last few days they've significantly boosted their planned output that they probably didn't have plans for a large election set, so will concentrate on the news studio.

And a couple of years on still think this Virgin Media branding is a complete mess.

Virgin Media One, Two and Three has not really caught on in Ireland. TV3 was by no means not the most loved channel, but there was a feeling that it was right. Virgin Media is not an Irish name, yes TV3 was not exactly Irish, but it had a better feeling to it.
