I thought the quality of the 7 way leaders debate on Virgin Media One last night was awful. Matt Cooper & Ivan Yates were doing way too much shouting while not giving the leaders a proper chance to speak about their pledges for their parties election campaigns. The level shouting from the moderators had died down a little bit when it was nearly coming up to the end of the debate. The reaction from people about the debate on Twitter has not been good either. Many people there were expressing their grievances with how the two moderators were performing during the debate. From a small selection of tweet being displayed. It didn't make for pretty reading.

On the other hand; I thought Gavin Reilly was a complete professional while he presented the Tonight Show straight after that horror show of a debate. I thought he did a great job asking the questions when they meant to be asked to all of the analysts on last night's show. He should be doing that programme more often as he has shown himself to be a very capable presenter into the future.

I didn’t see last nights debate but I must watch it back to see how bad it was. In general though I think that Gavin Reilly is excellent. He is by far and away Virgin Media’s best correspondent.

7 way political debates just generally don't make great television.

Does anyone know if The Tommy Tiernan Show is live on a Saturday or pre-recorded? As it uses Studio 4, would this cause problems for RTE election coverage the following day, unless they are not using Studio 4 for this election, and will use Studio 3 and 5 as has been suggested? Thanks.

Perfectly normal for an Irish GE results programme, although it’ll be early/mid-afternoon on Sunday before they have actual results to discuss.

The STV system is what usually causes the long delays in results, as Ireland has multi-seat constituencies and vote transfers etc. Long haul for the broadcasters to cover.

I think it was in 1977 the last time and Irish general election brought in one party with an overall majority - Fianna Fail under Jack Lynch I think, if my history is correct.

Since 1981 there has been no proper one party majority government in the Republic of Ireland - that must be a record for any country?

The speed of the result comes down entirely to how big a share of the vote the 'winning' candidates in each seat have. Looking at the opinion polls, there is the biggest spread of votes arguably ever witnessed in an Irish election, so we're in for a long one! Scotland has the same voting system for local authority elections. It's painfully slow and complicated and often leads to some questionable candidates winning their seat even though they only received a few hundred first preference votes. Brace yourself!

The presenters for RTE’s Election results coverage will be Bryan Dobson, Miriam O’ Callaghan and David McCullough until 18.00 on the Sunday with Claire Byrne taking over from Miriam from 18.40. Bryan, Miriam and David will be back then to anchor all of Monday’s coverage.

Not really the Tallys in Ireland done by the parties when the boxes open will quickly show the broad real picture. Any half decent analyst will be able to call the rough picture by the early afternoon.

After the last 2 local and general elections I'm not sure why anyone is paying much attention to the Irish opinion polls. The last poll in 2016 had Fine Gael beating Fianna Fail by 10 points, it was just over 1.Even the Exit poll at the last local election was outside the margin of error.
