Let's be honest about this - in the vast majority of cases, voting in a general election is about voting for the party you want to see in power in the next parliament.

I think for a lot of people it's about voting for the party you think has the best chance of beating the party you don't want to win.

Well as long as Labour don't win I'll be happy.

I am looking forward to the TV Debates they should be interesting and Julie is a great choice for ITV.

:O does this mean you've left the party, Ben? I'm shocked. I hope your website can continue to be an important resource about politics and itv despite this bombshell.

Yes I have left the Labour Party now and have no intention of ever being part of them again but I will still have an interest and watch the debates.

Do we know when the first debate will be on?

The way it's shaping up at the moment the best chance for a high turnout is if they make it Vote to Evict.

This discussion is in no way related to presentation but the comments above are just so pathetic in my view. Anybody that saw the leaders on Sky News today will have seen how capable these people are. I commend them for having the courage to put the country above their own interests both privately and professionally. I disagree with pretty much 90% of the policies of most of the parties but I really resent petty comments from the keyboard such as above when these people rightly or wrongly are trying their damnedest to better the country they belong to... Now lets return to pres discussion.

I strongly favour the former option. In this country we vote for the individual local candidate, it's not a presidential system where we vote for the leader.

But that's true in much of Europe, yet virtually all European countries have televised debates featuring party leaders.

Though a number of countries also have additional debates themed on specific policy areas, which rather than featuring the party leaders, instead feature their party spokespeople on that subject. So you get an Economy debate with the party finance leads etc. Works well at actually informing the electorate about party policies.

Will be interesting to see if any of the local TV channels set up their own debates - could be an opportunity for them to prove their worth.

London Live 'should' do this when the Mayor and Assembly elections happen in 2016.

Guess it will depend if the power of the Evening Standard can persuade the candidates to spend time appearing on a programme almost nobody in London will be watching.

I think the Standard normally do a debate with the Mayoral candidates, the last one being simulcast on LBC radio.

Sky News did a mayoral debate the last time hosted by Anna Botting as did Newsnight I believe.
