It is called public service broadcasting.

The point I was making was in relation to ITV: that given the scale of the BBC's coverage, it's a sensible decision from ITV not to duplicate theirs too and that Welsh viewers, including myself, won't be missing out.

I won't be arguing this further as it's going off-topic but very briefly - the provision of Welsh-language coverage is clearly justified; but in my view, provision of four completely bespoke election programmes (for a Westminster election!) on four out of five BBC Wales services, while network coverage (paying due attention to Wales) goes out on the fifth and at least two national radio stations, is unnecessary, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who holds such a view.

The coverage coming out of BBC Wales in Cardiff is a shameful waste of money for some absurdly small audiences - not only do they do the BBC1 Wales and S4C programmes, but IIRC last time round they did Radio Wales and Radio Cymru programmes through the night too.

This year the radio stations get simulcasts of the tv coverage

Quote:
Reporting and analysis of the six-week campaign will be underpinned by a comprehensive digital service, offering individual pages covering stories and candidate information from all of the Welsh constituencies.
On 7 May, Bethan Rhys Roberts and BBC Wales Political Editor Nick Servini will present the BBC One Wales results programme throughout election night, while Dewi Llwyd and BBC Wales Welsh Affairs Editor Vaughan Roderick will host proceedings on S4C. Both programmes will feature live results, expert views, interviews with the successful and losing candidates and analysis by interactive graphics presented by Arwyn Jones. These programmes will be simulcast on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.

On the Friday, UTV are also pre-empting Paul O' Grady at 17:00 as well as Weekend Escapes at 20:00 for local coverage.

Interesting - in a way it makes sense though the "swingometer" segments wouldn't translate too well to radio I'd have thought. I guess also they'll do something themselves from Friday morning once the TV programmes go off air.

I would imagine it would be as understandable as the television broadcast would be to blind people.

Any indication what BBC Alba are doing? From memory, last time around they had a camera in the Radio Nan GĂ idheal studio, despite nothing being on the EPG.

Other English regions are having their own debate, by the looks of it.

Are there opt outs on the BBC/ITV Election night programmes?

Must confess that's one of the first thoughts I had when I heard we were going to do it. I think you're particularly going to enjoy Martin's bits (I shall say no more!)
