I strongly favour the former option. In this country we vote for the individual local candidate, it's not a presidential system where we vote for the leader.

But that's true in much of Europe, yet virtually all European countries have televised debates featuring party leaders.

Though a number of countries also have additional debates themed on specific policy areas, which rather than featuring the party leaders, instead feature their party spokespeople on that subject. So you get an Economy debate with the party finance leads etc. Works well at actually informing the electorate about party policies.

Daily Politics did something like that last time, and C4 had the Chancellor's Debate - will be interesting to see whether DP will be doing that again and whether we'll see another Chancellor's Debate.

How will they decide who to include in a Chancellor debate though ? Very Happy Another can of worms opening.

Osborne and Balls are obvious choices, and presumably Danny Alexander. Beyond that I guess the broadcasters would invite the parties to nominate a spokesperson.

Can we also have Genirc talk about the election presentation in this thread?

So Cameron tonight saying he'll only take part in one debate with 7 leaders.

So Sky / C4 have just lost their debate, and the other two are up in the air.

Cameron wants the the head to head done before the start of April.

This is fast becoming an absolute shambles and one I blame the broadcasters for. The broadcasters have ceded to every request from David Cameron. What on earth were they playing at doing this? The broadcasters should have come to a firm agreement on the debates and stuck to it. If one leader didn't agree to this then tough, they will be empty chaired. Since when in The UK is it acceptable for politicians to interfere with broadcasters? It is outrageous that politicians have dictated the format of the debates. I know the broadcasters are too tame but I would be saying to Cameron all 3 debates or none!

This seems fairly unreasonable, after it's been changed to allow 2 of the debates to meet his wish of 7 leaders.

Cameron wants the the head to head done before the start of April.

He seems to be excluding that one now completely, according to BBC News. Shocked

I wish he'd make his mind up! This sort of shenanigans isn't doing him any favours. Rolling Eyes

If he does the debates again it will prove how awful he really is. Sky will be after him now,

I think the broadcasters should go ahead with the debates they proposed, and simply 'empty chair' those that don't wish to turn up.

I appreciate that Parliament is dissolved on 30 March, but there is no need for the debates to take place before this. They took place after dissolution last time, and during the purdah, which should have no relevance to the media at all.

The only reporting restrictions on the media is on the day of polling.

How do you empty chair the head to head debate ? Invite Clegg instead ?

I don't think it would come to that, do you? However, Clegg would still be Deputy PM, so I'm sure he would offer to take Cameron's place.
