The holy grail was always to catch the full 90 second countdown - which you were more likely to see on BBC1 at the crossover point to News 24. Despite numerous attempts, however, the most I ever got was 89 seconds!

Chances are that it started at 89. After all if it's a 90 second countdown and the 0 is seen before the top of the hour cut then it must start at 89?

looks like 90 to me

That countdown is so much better than anything we've had since. Don't get me wrong, the current countdown is good but nothing matches up to the 1999 original. Even the bbc1 balloon ident which precedes it in that video is so much better than the current idents. There was just something so special about early 2000s presentation on the Bbc that nothing has ever really matched up to it since.

Would have liked to have seen a few more of the countdowns today, not just the titles montage and two countdowns we saw.

I'm afraid our current archive deal prevented us doing that, we did what we could, sorry if that wasn't enough.

Chris, out of interest, I'd love to know if the BBC still has original copies of its BBC News idents/countdowns etc. Is that sort of stuff kept for posterity or deleted/destroyed after its useful life?

Many thanks for all your efforts yesterday - it was fantastic to see the old flags again in particular!

Sadly, as I found out while researching bits for the birthday, nothing is kept clean or as a kit of parts. All we had were the original PasB tapes which we spent quite a lot of time ordering from the archive - arcing to the correct shape and getting back onto the system.

Simon McCoy just interviewed Neil Reid, Director of News & Current Affairs.

Discussing 20 years of the News Channel. Yes exactly yes.

The whole thing was pretty much just b******s.

I'd expect it'll appear on Simon McCoy's Twitter feed shortly and that the Press Office is already taking MAJOR incoming on this.

Who spotted (what looked like) BBC Reith on the 'NEWS' text on the screen? Wink

'Neil' reminded me of Kelvin MacKenzie in that spoof. Laughing

Can I say I hated the original presentation - the flags, the small desks, it didn't say "news" at all.

James Harding is the Director of News? He isn't leaving until January?

I’d say Worlds interpretation was better, orchestral music made it more news like.
