Did it end with an extended version of the theme then? Rik Wakeman especially re-recorded it for the 1997 General Election.

Well I dipped in a few times, very interesting show and as a few have pointed out, the graphics and studio have stood the test of time quite well. Ten years is a long time but it still all looked very modern.
As an aide, I too would love to see a replay of 2000 Today but realise how unlikely it is! I was out of the country at the time and did set the VCR for a few hours, but it never taped

I know they had a camera mounted on a circular rail right up in the rafters - could it have been this?

What was the camera used for the flying end shot? I assume the credits were displayed over it, it was very impressive! I doubt it was a jib as that would've surely been anchored from were Dimbleby was sitting, and I didn't see any supports for a circular rail cam. Was it cable supported?

The camera spun around the studio for about a minute with the music but there was only one credit, on the end caption, unless originally it was done in the same way as the astons, which we never saw?
About five minutes earlier, the synth version of the theme was played for a while.

You mean the millennium bug *did* actually break something after all?

Would that be like this cheeky wee cam the French were using on their election coverage (on the right)?

Yep - it pops up to allow for Dimbleby being seated and Peter Snow stood up.

A similar remote rail cam is often used on a music shows in TC1 where there isn't much space - and you don't want to see a camera operator in shot.

Probably was, I guess they zoomed in a bit to create the illusion of it nearly decapitating Peter Snow. Great shot though.

It was delightful to watch the whole momentous night again in all its glory, even though I already had the BBC Election 97 Video which was basically a condensed version of this broadcast. (Here's a copy on ebay for anyone who didn't know about it).
A tiny bit disappointing that it couldn't be shown as it was originally brodcast with all the astons, credits, etc., but never mind.
One of the more remarkable points of the night was how Portillo's defeat took everyone by surprise, including all the pundits. Just a little earlier in the night his name kept cropping up as a possible contender for the Tory leader!
Thought the Frank Skinner bits were rubbish, though - they should have used Rory Bremner again.

I'm glad they didn't. The stuff I saw of his from the '92 election was pitiful. He just seemed to emulate the exact same mannersisms whether he was trying to impersonate John Major, Neil Kinnock or Paddy Ashdown, only choosing whether or not to wear glasses.

I've seen a recording of the show as broadcast and there were no credits on that either, just the end caption as per BBC Parliament's screening. Quite unusual given that 1992, 2001 and 2005 (I think) had the film style endless credits!
As for who asked when 1992 was shown - about a month ago, to mark 15 years since the event!

I particularly enjoyed watching it as I'd never actually seen any of it before. I was stationed at one of the counts for the BBC on the night, and so never got to see any of the television coverage.
I thought the BBC did a wonderful job of capturing the mood of the night. I remember at the time the buzz at the election count and the whispers that went around every time a big name got defeated. Watching it yesterday gave me the same feeling of excitement, hope and promise. Such a shame it all turned sour in the end.
From a presentation point of view, I was really surprised how cheap and nasty the titles were - and that big 'e' logo was horrible. Compared to the fantastic opening sequence for 1992, 97 seemed a real step back. The 92 set seemed much bigger and grander as well. The pink background was a bit icky.
As many have said as well, it would have been nice to have seen the straps announcing the results as they came in... even if it was just to see my own little contribution from the result I phoned in.
