Nice credit sequence just then featuring Mr. Bean. Shame they didn't show any Breakfast News though. We jumped from 06:00 to 09:30.

Blair appears...

So much for the manic rabid Sheffield Rally performance Tony.

Amazing how thrilling it is to watch even now. And look at the changes, Jill Dando and screaming lord sutch were still with us, Labour still called itself socialist, David Davies was still at the BBC, David Dimbleby's hair was still dark, George Alaigah still had hair, and Kenneth Clarke had only two chins!

The results too seem even more extraordinary. 77.7% turnout! The poll tax and recession and 14 million still voted for john major! A government getting 40% of the vote, and I haven't even mentioned the infamous exit polls! (To be fair though wasn't the 2005 exit poll exactly right?)

I hope they show the 1997 election on the May day bank holiday, I loved seeing all the tory seats explode!

Labour was much better when it was socialist. And Alagiah still has some hair...

Interesting to hear how many times on this programme the Tories and the business leaders predicted doom and gloom and economic disaster if Labour had got in and brought in a minimum wage. Apparently it would have led to catastrophic inflation levels, collapsing profits, supermarkets closing down because they couldn't afford staff, etc.

But Labour would never be elected if it was. Personal Greed and Wealth in the 'middle classes' has hit that on the head, thankfully. They're dangerous enough now.

This has actually been really good very interesting to see what a difference 15 years can make. The only bad thing to say (apart from the tories winning of course) is about the BBC italic font my god it's ugly.

A young George Galloway going for that Magnum P.I. look!

the fact they've chosen to select forced pillarboxing is irritating. it'd be nice to be able to watch it in 4:3 on a 4:3 tv - rather than having the black surround.

Regardless of your political persuasion, you had to feel sorry for Kinnock when they cut away from the scenes of Major re-entering No.10 to Jennie Bond standing outside Kinnock's crappy little house with a Fiat Uno outside. It was such a dramatic contrast.

Hmmm... I dunno. I think Labour could have just scraped it in 92 if they'd had a leader who was slightly more statesman-like in the eyes of the voter. It was a very narrow margin in the end, and the presentation/PR factor could have been the thing that tipped it instead of the policies.

Laughing Amazing to see how these faces have aged; and a bit of a scary indicator of just how far back that was.

Liking the set design, and I agree the oblique version of the font (a condensed Futura? I don't know the exact name, someone may have mentioned it previously) doesn't look great for where it is used, although I think the non-oblique variant used elsewhere looks fine. The old Swingometer was fab too.

I was amused at how, at the end of some outside links the picture would flip / rotate at an angle parallel to the slanted logo behind it, and then fade away in place to reveal it. An effect that would look very dated nowadays I'm sure, but nice to see nonetheless!

Had Thatcher stayed on till the 92 election then Labour probably would have won a substantial majority as she simply would never have dumped the 'Community Charge' (Poll Tax).
