Hi all, opening post on the forums, though I've been 'lurking' for a while.
Can you help to identify a newsreader from the 1980s for me please? In an excellent 'Falklands 25' programme on BBC Parliament back in April 2007, Brian Hanrahan introduced clips of the BBC's Falklands conflict coverage from 1982, as well as whole editions of Newsnight and the 5.40 Evening News.
As well as featuring the 'usual suspects' from bulletins of the period - Richard Baker, Jan Leeming, Nicholas Witchell, etc - two of these editions of the 5.40 summary during April 82 were read by a white-haired presenter, whose name I just can't remember. I believe he was more familiar as a reporter than sitting behind the desk. For some reason I think his first name is 'Mike' but I might be wrong. Can anyone help?
(Note: Mike Smartt, Michael Cole and Michael Peschardt all fronted occasional BBC bulletins around this time, but I know it's not any of them!!)
Thanks in advance.

Kenneth Kendall seems the most likely at that time.

He went on to present the early few series of Treasure Hunt on Channel Four.

Ladies and Gents,

The newscaster in question from the 1982 era was indeed MICHAEL SULLIVAN.

At that particular point in time, the 5:40 bulletin was normally fronted by Richard Baker. There were ocassional stand-in's, namely:

Jan Leeming (BBC Duty Weekend Newsreader 1982)
Kenneth Kendall (BBC Duty Weekend Newsreader 1982)
Michael Sullivan (Senior reporter, who filled-in on 5:40 bulletins and, rarely, News After Noon)
Linda Alexander (Reporter who filled-in on 5:40 bulletins for a few months too)

Spot on, Norma and BBC World, the newsreader was indeed Michael Sullivan, I remembered it as soon as I saw it written down there. And thanks to everyone else who contributed to the thread.
