The current government seems to like late night embargoes so stories can appear on the next day's newspapers with a sense of immediacy. It can also help knock other stories of the front pages.
Embargoes are only really justified where journalists need time to properly digest a story, eg with a substantial report.
Journalists have little choice to comply as they'll be frozen out if they don't play by the rules. Though it is a bit irritating to see many Westminster journalists tweeting the moment an embargo is lifted as though they are single handedly breaking a major story.

no, the press hate embargoes. they exist to enable the government to control the flow of news to the public
They're not just from the government, all sorts of news items or PR have embargoes.
I wouldn't say the press 'hate them', they are often useful to media outlets too, it gives them a chance to prepare better stories than they would with zero notice
Yep, as someone who works in the press, i know what they're for
we hate them and ignore them unless they're from the government. the most obvious example of an embargo still adhered to is the honours lists, but even they are leaked and briefed like this was.
i still think the 10.30pm timing was ostensibly for the televised paper reviews, because they air at 10.30pm and would have this story as their splashes.

I know! I just read through most of the thread and only realised it was yesterday when I saw a 1am post time! Thought someone couldn’t count the days as they said 6 days before Monday and thought errr no it’s 5
This thread is going to have to be phased out, or else people will think there is another embargo every night

In this day of constant news embargoes are as far as I’m concerned anachronistic in 2020 unless they can be used to get some good research in the time allowed but i think given the reactions on this thread they’ll be regarded as something to be dreaded.
