Oh for the love of the wee man would you PLEASE quote Guardian stories when you link them.

I'm not known for over-reacting (!), but you do this every single time.

It's free and easy to register - well worth taking 2 minutes to do so.

I did, but my details are cookied on my pc at home, so I can't remember which of my many email addresses I used. I'm also aware of "Bugmenot" passwords, but again, it's a bit of a pain.

Anyway James, its arguably *easier* for you to copy and paste the text instead of the link.

Pretty please?

Remember the dog who could do mental arithmetic? The hamster who was given a bus pass? Or perhaps the couple who couldn't decide what to call their baby - so gave it 139 names?

All have appeared on the ITN's "and finally..." slot, which began on News at Ten and continues on the ITV News today. As part of its 50th birthday celebrations, ITN has come up with a list of the top 10 best and quirkiest clips from the last five decades.

Sweep the hamster takes the number one spot. The report, broadcast 10 years ago, told how the hamster was given a bus pass after a driver insisted on charging Sweep's owner the full fare for his pet.

Narrowly beaten into second place is the story of a Spanish brewery, which came up with an unusual solution to its mice problem - ply the rodents with drink. The intoxicated animals were no threat to barrels of wine, and were even provided with miniature ladders to help them to the top of the sherry glass.

Unsurprisingly perhaps, animals feature in six of the top 10 clips. And no, it doesn't include the skate-boarding duck - that was on BBC1's Nationwide.

The most recent "and finally" comes from 1997, and the story of Eileen Halliday, whose home ended up in the middle of a supermarket car park after she refused to sell her home to Sainsbury's during the building of its new Stroud store.

Ms Halliday was invited to open the new supermarket and said one of the benefits of her unlikely location was she "didn't even have to walk beyond the front gate to pick up her shopping".

Other animals making the top 10 are Downing Street cat Humphrey, who was given his own press conference after returning to number 10 after several months missing, and the retirement of Sefton, who became the nation's favourite horse after being badly injured in the IRA bomb in Hyde Park in 1982.

"The 'and finally...' slot is instantly recognisable and one that viewers have come to love over the years," said an ITN spokeswoman.

"We have tried to pick some of the quirky and really bizarre stories over the decades for this top 10, and had great fun doing it. We tried to get a real spread, with some of the things that everyone remembers such as the hamster and Bingo the Dog, along with stories from every decade."

The oldest report is from 1961 and the story of Bingo the Dog, who was able to do sums in front of school children. When Bingo's trainer asked him to count to three, he barked three times. The school children then asked Bingo to add two plus three, and the dog barked five times.

The top 10 stories will be shown in a special programme with Sir Trevor McDonald on the ITV News Channel tomorrow at 7pm.

The top 10
1 Sweep the Hamster gets a bus pass (1995)
2 Spanish sherry brewery gets mice drunk (1986)
3 Michael Nicholson interviews a rocket man (1966)
4 The home in the middle of a Sainsbury's car park (1997)
5 Humphrey the cat returns to Downing Street (1995)
6 Sefton, the nation's favourite horse, retires (1984)
7 The baby with 139 names (1986)
8 Bingo the dog does arithmetic (1961)
9 Spanish mime artist becomes zoo exhibit (1985)

Looks like Trevor's not actually presenting the special, though...

And they've been keeping the tradition of silly/surreal stories alive this afternoon:

The reports were good, as you'd expect (the drunken mice my personal favourite) and Sir Trev was excellent in his interview about the items, coming across much better than usual.

The programme could have been better though - it was basically Joyce linking to the reports. They should have packaged it into a 30 minute programme and used the clips of the original newsreaders to introduced the reports - and that way it could have become a repeatable feature used to fill the odd slot on the News Channel.

Well, if you saw the repeat at 10 it went a little tits up. They played out the whole lot up untill number 2 when the clip obviously failed. Joyce filled very poorly and made a complete hash.

Also they did the coming up bit unrecorded, so suddenly Sir Trev wasnt there. Well that really hashed up something that could have been good!!
