I assume it's due to the slanted nature of the descender of the 'y' character meaning there appears to be a lot of free space on the bottom right part of the black 'sky' box which you do not get on the left with the 's', perhaps tricking you into seeing what you perceive as an asymmetry. Don't feel 'shot down' by me pointing out that your assumption was incorrect . You said you felt the logo looked off-centre and I didn't think it did, so I checked. There's no malice in my comment, merely trying to give the most accurate/useful possible feedback to the creator of the mock.

....Yeah, you're right.

I guess I just saw something that wasn't really wrong.

...although it is not centered vertically. That I did check.

The real Sky logos are never centred vertically either.

Here's an example for you (used this logo specifically for the fact that it's got a border making it easy to measure accurately).

*

The number of pixels between the topmost point of the 'k' and the top border is 55px, while the number of pixels between the lowermost point of the 'y' and the bottom border is 41px. (It's also clearly not exactly central horizontally either, but we're talking specifically about the vertical positioning here.)

The point is, it doesn't have to be positioned exactly evenly, left, right, up, and down - it's about how the eye perceives it, and, as far as I'm concerned, the way Nancer has positioned the 'sky' logo is perfectly good and appears to be nice and central within its box.

I see your point.

Understandable.

Carry on.

No offence, but it looks much blander than what we currently have.

The point about the vertical positioning is that it is centred if you look solely at the x-height.

That's fair enough, Andrew. I was just making the point that good design doesn't just come down to whether everything has exactly vertically/horizontally central positioning. Your point above is fair and is also true for the 'sky' if you take the top and bottom of the 's' for example.

To humor the idea this thread is going for, I took the current Sky logos - at least some of them - and simply removed the gloss efect, among other things.

Long image, check the spoiler.

and now, something unnecessary. A comparison between Nancer's work and mine.

Feel it’s much stronger with no box

You think the Sky logo shouldn't be in a black box?
