Granada North West Today
Hello, I've been a keen browser of this site over the years, posting under Bander and Mr Fantastic (I used to look at APFS as well, think l might have posted some mocks but it was so long I can't remember) and after a long break, have finally decided to post some designs I've been working on for you to consider and critique.

I feel RT has been in need of a bit of a refresh for a few years now, and with the launch of the French channel as well, the on screen look is a bit dated.

The first idea was to take the logo out of its box, which would allow it to interact with the space in a different way and refresh the logo without it becoming unfamiliar to viewers who knew the brand already. I started from the base up and tried to create a lighter look that would still make the most of the on-screen space without feeling too cluttered.

The DOG is now more muted, but is still prominent, and the ticker and time bug have a lighter feel. In addition, a more modern typeface is adopted across the look to create a unified design.

*

*

The standard headline graphic has changed from white to green to shift the emphasis towards the stories themselves with any breaking news turning the bar red, and the design also leaves space for another aston to the right, which can show location or details of which show is airing.

Changing the emphasis on the colours also means that the channel's graphics are more adaptable to different colour schemes with different shows (which at the moment can look a bit disjointed) - in this case I've used IN THE NOW, an opinion programme that uses social media.

Finally, one of the most important issues was to unify the different on-screen typefaces used - at the moment, RT uses different fonts which don't necessarily complement each other. This was one of the main factors in my choice of font - I needed something modern yet accessible to viewers, and the look can also be used for full-screen graphics, which RT uses often to illustrate stories.

Hope you like these, and feel free to comment Smile

These are very good, between respectable and impressive, but right now not totally sure which rating to give it. Couple of points that come up from this.

1: With all the graphics very much being in boxes, the fact the RT logo isn't in a box, makes it stand out, but not in a good way. I like the idea of taking it out of the box, but this graphical look doesn't work right with the unboxed logo.

2: I'm not a fan of the way the clock isn't lined up with the logo. I'm also not totally convinced that you could fit "NEW YORK" which is graphically the longest city name they use on the clock, in your current design. Maybe if the RT logo was bigger, so the clock acted as like an underline, maybe it would look better, I don't know, but not keen on that aspect.

On the plus side, I do like the idea of a green bar for news programmes, turning red for breaking news, that I think would work very well, I also like the fact that you've gone with a single font here, keeps the look very clean, which works brilliantly. The flipper looks very crisp and clean, which is good. And the fact that the look for In The Now, still looks crisp and clean, and RT, despite being different colour scheme, is really good, you've pulled that off well.

I am curious to see what it would look like for other shows, and also curious if you would change the open in any way. Pretty good.
