So I've decided to have a go at reworking the Reporting Scotland titles following their new set launch yesterday. 2014 is set to be quite a big year for Scotland with the commonwealth games, independence vote and more, as such I thought I'd start by re-creating the titles as best I could, then adapting them and tweaking to try and (in my opinion) improve upon them.

Given how long they stuck with the 1999 blue style titles they're clearly fond of sticking with what they know, so I didn't want anything to be too much of a departure from what they already have, merely tweaked and adapted.

I'm also going to post the progress of this mock as I make it, rather than as a final project as I want to take in your ideas and feedback as I go.

So I start, very simply with the title form up, similar to what we have but in my own way. I've lost the BBC News box till I can find a way of adding it that I like. I've also tried to make it brighter and more vivid then current as the other regions are doing by way of colour video for the titles and stronger colours, whilst keeping red/blue as the main theme.

This is a still from After Effects, the final project will hopefully include titles, stings, and endcap, but for now this is what you get.

And for giggles here's a video, including the mark 1 basics which looks horrid.

Those placenames around the map, should be in bold, with loose letter spacing, but its looking good so far. Smile

I think the colours are good. I'm not sure SCOTLAND looks that great in bold. I'd love to see this mock progress though.

I went with semi-bold but you're right bold looks better. Now if I can get my head around the connecting lines (which I've never satisfactorily reproduced before) we'll be mostly done for the static.

Here's one with semi-bold "Scotland" and bold placenames.

Looking pretty good, however not a fan the UK shadow in the background, and is Cardiff and Rome meant to be slap bang in the middle of Northern and Central Scotland?

While you're changing the places you could always try chucking in a couple of Scottish locations Wink

James, yes and no. I thought about that but I wanted to keep it to capital cities for now. I know its a regional programme but hypothetically should Scotland become independent then fictionally they would cover world stories, but now I've typed that it sounds like BS so yeah, I'll make those local next.

Edit: Also by that logic I shouldn't include the UK either... So yeah local is best...

And that's why I like doing work in progress mocks.

Looking good so far.

Would playing with the "SCOTLAND" text / logo be an option for you - I'm really starting to dislike that weight of Gill Sans.

Also, pedantic hat on, Baghdad has a 'H' in it Wink

Surely if Scotland became independent the programme would eventually cease to exist Wink

What 3D software do you typically use?

I can tell you how I do it in 3DS Max.
