New set for Salford

New studio for BBC Breakfast and NWT (February 2016)

Yesterday in The Newsroom we were discussing the current BBC Breakfast/NWT set which, to be honest, I've never liked. Nonetheless some people suggested that it would be impossible to put a W1 style set in there, something I took as a challenge. The dimensions of the studio are fairly accurate and are more based on the area the previous set occupied than anything else. I've given the set three sections - the main rostrum area, the weather/business area and the performance area and also made sure that the entrances and exits to the set are clear.

Love the set. Brilliant! Would like to see this with different backrops though.

Excellent, reminds me slightly of DrewF's mock from a year or two ago (in the way the sofa is positioned and the centre screen)

I've often wondered whether the sofa area could be rotated 90 degrees, as that is the widest end of the set, and would look much better, as shown in your mock. Thumbs up

As long as you think it will fit with the dimensions of the studio. Don't these large plasma screens require a lot of space behind them, or is it considerably less than the old Barco screens?

Looks so much better even if in reality we're kind of only circling the square, but the choice and position of the sofa make it feel so much bigger. I think that is quite a realistic revamp too.

I was watching breakfast a few weeks ago thinking about the sofa positioned as above could look better. Would it be tight for the cameras though?

I don't think the large plasmas need much room, the left one on the walkway in Studios E and C almost back on to the wall, the Barcos I think needed rear access for things like bulb changing and ventilation.

Thanks, I was trying to make it a realistic revamp taking into account budgetary limitations - that's the one issue with BBC set mocks. I've taken influences manly from Glasgow and Cardiff which is what I imagine a future set in Belfast will look like as well.

Actually this set up would probably give more room for cameras as currently they are pretty much backed against the wall, here they've got the central area to move around in.

Fantastic.

Looking at the picture below, you'd be able to squeeze three 103" plasmas there, especially if they're in a circular line, and it would remove the awkard corner.

Wow - these look fantastic, well done. I've been (very slowly) working on a new set design for Salford too and I've been trying hard to get the size/shape of the studio right, as I think my previous efforts have been slightly too big, and certainly to me it looks like it would just about fit!

Thumbs up

The set may well fit, but I'm not sure any cameras would... To get the reverse shots for interviewees the cameras tuck right around to the left and right of the sofa, with this design the ones on the right would see the back wall and the ones on the left would see the ones on the right?
