A video exists on youtube showing the end of ITV schools on 4, in June 1993. So, we all know how it ended. But, back in June 1987, at the end of the last schools programme on ITV, what happened? The normal procedure was for ITV announcers to make an announcement, like "ITV schools programmes will be back tomorrow/monday/next term".

But what really did happen? Did announcers make their announcements, or was the trailer warning schools of the changes taking place, the move to channel 4 from 14th September, shown instead? And, long shot, do any videos exist?

As you say, normally the local announcers would make the announcement at the end of a term, giving the date when schools programmes would return, or perhaps just say ' in January' or 'in the Autumn'. Promos aired frequently in junctions during the end of the summer term 1987 (there were several variants, most showing the Bullseye studio for some reason - I'm sure you know the ones I mean) and from memory in Tyne Tees land we got one of these after the final schools programme on the last day of ITV tx's before the local announcer popped up and introduced the children's programmes that followed. Nothing more 'special' or 'nostalgic' was networked, although whether other regions chose to mark the occasion in some other way I don't know.

When ITV Schools moved to C4 it only heralded a change of channel and new graphics. They were at pains to point out it was THE SAME service to schools. It was paid for and commissioned in the same way. The bigger change in that sense was actually in 1993 when ITV Schools came to an end and C4 assumed responsibility for the output.

Some regional announcers may well have observed that it was the last morning of schools programmes on , for instance, "Grampian" or "Anglia" if they had a 12 o clock slot. But it was no big deal to mark to the wider audience. The key thing was to make sure schools knew about the move. As far as the general audience was concerned, promoting Morning ITV, which properly started the following Monday, would have been more likely.

Enthusiasts and, dare I say it, anoraks sometimes imagine that changes like the last morning of Schools on BBC1 or ITV were more significant to the broadcasters and the wider public than they actually were. The significant thing in 1987 was the opening up of the morning schedule... something which might have happened as early as 1983 had the IBA not ruled out the idea of transferring Schools until C4 coverage was virtually universal.
