General text used in articles, should be a readable font like this your reading now, in a font that most computers will recognise, eg, Arial, Tahoma, etc.
Personally, I don't think it looks that bad. Maybe, where part of your Headline in the headline boxes on the 'Homepage' design is 'SPORT RESULT' or 'TRAVEL', incorporate that into the image above the headline text. Otherwise, not all that bad.
Across the top, where you've got the menu bar, these look Channel4.com-esque? Not sure about them either.

So you are saying if that design launched on itv.com now, it would be a step forward and not back??
I'm torn as to the answer to that. Whilst there are bits which look better than the teal curves and boxes on the actual ITV site, there are things that this design lacks that would make it a step back feature-wise. No links to the rest of ITV is one, or indeed sections of the news like 'Sport' and 'Weather', where you only get stories related to these topics. And the alignment on the 'Breaking' line at the top of the page.
